THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR

1999

Why remake a classic genre heist film? Only if you can make it better. Did they do that here? ABSOLUTELY!!! As a lover of the !968 Faye Dunaway/Steve McQueen classic, I was prepared to hate this remake. Was I in for a surprise! Everything about this new film is first-rate: the story has been painlessly and brilliantly modernized; the characters are SO well-written and perfectly acted, especially by Rene Russo and Dennis Leary(Pierce Brosnan is not bad either;)the setting has been changed from a scenically- magical Boston in 1968 to a glamorously- shining New York of 1999; and the music is just right for every scene. Let's see how good you are. Can you spot the SECOND reference to the 1968 film, in THIS one? (Not one of the reviewers that I saw, mentioned it!) Obviously, using Faye Dunaway to play Crown's psychiatrist is the first one. Now, TELL ME WHAT THE SECOND REFERENCE IS!

This sleek and stylish movie is the cure for summer boredom... as long as you don't read too far into anything. Pierce Brosnan plays a millionaire who has taken to burglary to make his life more exciting. Rene Russo is the insurance investigator who pursues Brosnan and we have some fireworks. The film has a great look, an interesting story and a soundtrack that just grabs you. I do feel that Russo is a little weak and there are certain aspects of the film that are just dumb, but overall this was a very enjoyable film.
