THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

1999

If you're like me, and you think that the only REAL James Bond stories are those fourteen that were written by Ian Fleming, and that the only REAL James Bond was Sean Connery...get over it! "The World is not Enough" is every bit as good as the original Fleming stories with an intrticate plot, believable characters, unique settings and action that, for once, seems to be plot-driven. Pierce Brosnan moves beyond the James Bonds of the past, giving us a real person without the smirks, the innuendo-filled asides, and the cartoonish quality, that has seeped into what was originally a real person. He's a darker, perhaps less charming, but a much more focused Bond. M, Q, and the villains are all three-dimensional characters. Denise Richards is the only flaw in the film. It's too bad that the directors didn't fully trust their mature vision for this new Bond, and felt the need to throw in this incompertent BOOBY- prize.

The latest installment in the James Bond series, again starring Pierce Brosnan as 007, could be one of the worst ever. You've all seen Bond films and you all know the formula, but this one loads up on the tasteless (not really clever) sexual innuendoes and gives us a Bond who is much darker and mean-spirited than I'm used to. It's hard to grasp why Bond is so much more vengeful and mad in this one, but its definitely not because he is having problems figuring out the plot -its very simple and much less elaborate than previous stories. Even the action scenes are boring and I found myself dozing several times. The villain is to laugh at. And, if you want to see my worst actress of the year nomination, check out Denise Richards' performance as nuclear scientist Christmas Jones. Oh, please.
