I've seen most of the best movies in the "submarine genre"("Das Boot," "Run Silent, Run Deep," "Crimson Tide") category, and this one is by far the most exciting. The star of the film is the submarine and the loud sound effects created by the depth charges that make life miserable for the besieged crew. Part of the crew consists of two of the most unlikely persons to appear together this year....Harvey Keitel and Jon Bon Jovi! Matthew McConeghy(sp?) does a fine job of looking stone-faced and "in charge." A wild ride; you'll enjoy it from the edge of your seat, where I was for the entire last half of the film. |

Let me just say that this is one of the most exciting movies I've seen in a while. A team of naval officers during WWII are trapped at sea, the only way home being a badly damaged German submarine that they've just captured trying to steal a secret German code machine. Not a true story itself, the facts in U-571 concerning the German Enigma code machine are real and the US missions to capture it are what inspired this film. Matthew McConaughy, Harvey Keitel and Bill Paxton star with a surprisingly good performance (even though its short) by Jon Bon Jovi. The film is well-directed, the effects and the sound are great and I also really enjoyed the score. The only reason why this one isn't getting a 5 is because of a few cheesy lines thrown in here and there. Otherwise, I highly recommend it. |
