WHERE THE HEART IS

2000

Natalie Portman stars as a young woman who keeps her head up through all that life throws at her and prevails in WHERE THE HEART IS. You may be familiar with this one as "the one where the girl has the baby in a Wal-Mart." Sometimes touching, sometimes ridiculous, this film is kind of a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Disaster strikes and everyone gets through it... again and again and again. Portman is good and so is Ashley Judd who plays her multiple-baby producing best friend. Sally Fields breaks her typecast as the great mother who loses her child and has a short cameo as a terrible mother who has abandoned her child. Joan Cusack is regrettably underused. And the names of some of the characters in this film get annoying once the initial humor wears off: Novalee, Americus, Praline and Brownie. Whatever.
