WILD WILD WEST

1999

All the gadgets and special effects in the world just cannot make up for the complete lack of an interesting plot in this bizarre western. Will Smith and Kevin Kline play federal officers trying to save President Ulysses S. Grant from assassination by a psycho confederate (Kenneth Branaugh) looking for revenge after the Civil War ends. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, I was hoping this film was going to have the same great look and special effects of Men In Black from 2 summers ago. Instead, the special effects looked terrible (did they shoot NOTHING on location?), the characters looked ridiculous, and all of the charisma that MIB had, this film completely lacks. And like you probably thought when you saw the trailer, the giant mechanical tarantula is just stupid. The one good thing about this film... Will Smith. He provides all of the film's humor and action. Even so, I wouldn't recommend you spend the $8.25. Wait for video.
