Eternal Destiny
Part 4

The early morning air was a cool brisk breeze gently blowing through the large oak tree outside Sarah's window. When she and her mother had first moved here, her new father had let her chose whichever room she wanted. She remembered running up the steps for the first time and exploring every little nook and cranny that she could fit in. Stumbling across this room after a tiring and exciting day of exploring, Sarah had curled up on the little window seat and had fallen sound asleep. From that moment on, the room had been hers and she loved every minute she spent in it.

Remembering Jack, Sarah quickly threw her blankets off and hopped out of bed. She quietly opened her door, peering down the slightly darkened hallway to see if anyone was up yet. She patiently listened as the clock down the hall chimed 5:30. After hearing no movement, knowing that her father had probably left to go to work at the hospital and her mother was sleeping for as long as she could before Laura would wake her, Sarah continued down the hall towards the guestroom, her bare feet tapping against the wooden floor. Being an extremely curious little child and with the novelty of someone new staying in their house, Sarah stopped in front of the guestroom door. She gently nudged the door open and stepped inside. She could see Jack's back as his body gently rose up and down as he slept peacefully under the handmade quilt.

"Jack?" Sarah barely whispered, just to make sure he was asleep. Jack exhaled and turned around slightly, still sound asleep. Stifling a giggle, Sarah gently climbed onto the bed. Laying down on her stomach and facing Jack, she perched herself up on her elbows.

She watched him carefully with each breath, his blonde hair gently falling over his closed eyes. Although she had met Jack for the first time last night, Sarah already liked him. He seemed like a lot of fun to be around, always joking around or pulling a magic trick out of his pocket. She hoped that he would be staying for a while…maybe they could even be friends.

Sarah couldn't help but giggle as she watched Jack mumble to himself as he shifted under the covers once more. She scooted up closer to Jack's face as she curiously watched his eyes start to flicker open.

After briefly opening his eyes and shutting them once more, Jack's eyes widened dramatically as he jumped at the site of the little face peering into his own.

"Son of a bi-" Jack stopped himself short as he saw it was Sarah. He relaxed a little bit and exhaled, briefly rubbing the sleep from his eyes with his right hand. "Good morning Sarah."

Sarah smiled brightly, not at all affected by the early morning hours. "Good morning!"

Although a little surprised and confused, Jack smiled. "You're up early aren't you? What time is it anyway?" Jack took a glance towards the little clock sitting on the dresser across the room. "5:38…do you always wake up this early?" Jack chuckled lightly.

"Yep…Mommy usually wakes up at the same time because she has to take care of Laura. But Daddy wakes up before all of us because he has to go to work and be a doctor. Don't you wake up early?"

"I used to…when I lived on my farm in Wisconsin."

Sarah's eyes widened. She had always wanted to live on a farm after her teacher had read the class the book Charlotte's Web. She had even asked her parents if they would buy her some farm animals, but of course she got the answer that she knew all along…no. "You have a farm?"

"Well, I used to. I sold it so I can move to California."

"You're moving? I thought you were staying here!"

Jack grimaced slightly. "Yeah, well…sometimes people need to just move on." Sarah's forehead wrinkled in thought.

"Sarah? Darling, where are you?" Rose's voice could be heard in the hallway. Jack saw Sarah's eyes perk up as she quickly ran to the door, thrusting it open.

"I'm right here mommy." Sarah said casually. For Jack, the word mommy being addressed to Rose was still a little bit of an adjustment.

"What on earth?" Rose gently mumbled. She followed Sarah's voice into the room where she saw Jack getting out of bed. She looked down at Sarah who was innocently sitting next to Jack on the bed. For Rose, it was a bittersweet sight, as she looked at father and daughter together. God Sarah looks so much like him… Rose gently shook the thought out of her mind, not wanting to think about that right now. "What are you doing in here Sarah?"

Sarah just smiled. "I came to see Jack."

"At 5:30 in the morning?" Sarah just shrugged her shoulders, not quite understanding the concept of time. Rose just sighed. She turned towards Jack. "I'm sorry about that Jack. Sarah's always been known to wake up with the sun."

Jack just smiled. "It's alright. It was about time for me to wake up anyway."

Rose couldn't help but smile. Sarah ran up into her mother's arms, which picked her up. Rose straitened her daughter's wild curly hair as she spoke. "Well, since everyone's already up, why don't why go on downstairs. We can have some breakfast, get washed up and see what we want to do from there. How's that sound?" Jack just nodded his approval.

"Oh goodie! What are we having for breakfast mommy?" Sarah looked at her mother expectantly.

Rose turned back towards Sarah. "Well, I did happen to make one of your favorites…"

Sarah giggled. "What?"

"Pancakes with lots of maple syrup and orange juice."

Sarah smiled in delight, hopping down from her mother's arms. "Oh goodie!" She ran over to Jack, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the door. "Come on Jack! You've got to try these. My mommy makes the best pancakes in the whole wide world!"

Jack's hand was trembling as he slipped the train ticket for Los Angeles, California into his pocket. After spending the day with Rose and Sarah, he had finally decided that it was time to move on. They had taken him all over the little town of Cedar Rapids, showing him the buildings and people that they saw everyday. Sarah had been so excited, treating Jack like an idol and insisting that she get to hold his hand. Jack had treasured every minute of it, knowing that the chances of him being able to do this again were slim. But he knew that it would be his time to leave sooner or later and after seeing the good and happy life that Rose was now able to live, Jack was satisfied in knowing that she would be alright…and so would their daughter.

For Sarah, Jack would be nothing more than a good friend that she once got to spend the day with in Cedar Rapids. She would probably end up forgetting all about him within a matter of weeks and would go on with her life, never knowing the truth until someday when Rose maybe would tell her about him. It pained Jack immensely to know he was leaving the two people in his life that he treasured most, but when catching a glance at Rose and Michael together, he knew it was the right decision. He couldn't expect Rose to break apart her family just because he showed up on her doorstep seven years after the fact. It just wasn't right.

Now, as Jack waited at the train station with the Calvert family, he became more agitated with every passing second. Mike had an almost relieved look on his face while Rose sat on a bench with Sarah in her arms, lost in her own world.

Sarah was beginning her pouting session again. She didn't want Jack to leave. She had just met him and had been hoping that they could be good friends. It seemed like he was leaving as quickly as he had arrived. At hearing the whistle for passengers to start loading the train, Sarah jumped to the ground, bringing her mother out of a trance.

"Why do you have to go Jack?" Sarah pouted as Jack kneeled down to be eye level with her.

"Because Kiddo," Sarah smiled briefly at Jack's new nickname for her. "I have to go to California, remember?"

"But why can't you stay here? You could come and live here in Cedar Rapids. Then you could buy a house just down the street from mine so we could see each other everyday." Sarah's innocence was so painful for Jack and Rose.

Jack smiled a nervous and painful smile, trying to hold back his emotions. "I wish I could Sarah, I wish I could." Jack paused as the conductor yelled for all passengers to board. He looked back at Sarah who was beginning to get tears in her eyes. "Tell you what," Jack began to dig through his bag, searching for the one thing that had kept him going through all of the hard times. Pulling out a leather bound notebook, identical to one that Rose would have recognized, Jack held it out in front of him. "Why don't you take this off my hands. I remember your mom telling me about how much you like to draw. Now you have a place to put all those drawings." Jack opened the book to reveal a pad of clean white paper and a little pocket for finished drawings. Sarah smiled as Jack nudged the notebook towards her, signaling for her to take it. Feeling completely honored by Jack giving her his portfolio, Sarah brought it close to her, wrapping her arms around it.

"Thank you." She said, giving Jack a big hug. Jack was overcome with emotion. He couldn't believe this was happening to him. A tear fell down Rose's cheek as she covered her mouth. Even Mike was a little speechless. He now knew that Jack was Sarah's real father, even though Rose had never officially told him. Deep down inside, Mike knew that if he were faced with the same situation, maybe even the other way around, he would never have the guts to stay strong for the family's sake. He now seemed to have more admiration for this man who wasn't thinking of himself and his needs, but everyone else instead.

"Jack," Sarah pulled away, looking Jack straight in the eye. "Will I see you again?"

"I don't know. I'll make you a deal though. When I get to California, I'll send you some pictures…drawings that is; I never really got into photography." Sarah smiled, knowing that Jack was an old fashioned artist. "But, on the condition that you do the same for me." Sarah's smile widened.

"That's a deal." She playfully held out her hand to shake Jack's. Jack chuckled, taking the little hand into his own.

"Last call for passengers! Train leaving for Los Angeles, California in one minute!" The conductor yelled from the train.

Jack stood up. He looked over towards Mike and Rose. "I guess that's my cue. Thanks so much for your kind hospitality. It was a pleasure seeing all of you." He said, briefly looking over towards Rose. He held his hand out to Mike who took it with his free hand, the other one holding baby Laura. God, she looks just like Rose… he thought. He brushed the baby's cheek with his finger, in turn receiving a smile. He then went over to Rose, giving her a quick hug, carefully tucking a note into her pocket without anyone noticing. "It was nice to see you again Rose. You take care of yourself."

"You too Jack." Rose tried to smile, but it seemed pointless.

On noticing the train start to lurch forward, Jack backed away, gently tilting Sarah's chin up and smiling as he passed. He hopped onto the train, waving goodbye as he disappeared inside.

Rose watched until the train could no longer be seen. "Sarah sweetheart, come on…let's go home." Tucking her hands into her pockets, Rose began to walk towards their old Model T. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek, replacing her hands in her pockets. But something felt odd. There was something in her pocket. Carefully feeling the object with her thumb and forefinger, she pulled a small piece of paper out of her pocket, stopping to unfold it. Inside, were the words "You Made It Count."
