Chapter 6
A Walk In the Park

"And then my teacher Mrs. Wilson ended up running out of the room covered from head to toe in chalk dust, screaming at the top of her lungs. Of course my friend Henry Stanton and I had a hefty price to pay for our brief moments of fun. Ah, but it was worth it." Rose sat back on the park bench, a peel of giggles escaping her lips. Jack had been telling her of his childhood back in Wisconsin and how he was always getting into trouble with his teachers.

Jack and Rose had spent the afternoon mainly just getting to know each other a little better and stopping to do whatever caught their eyes. Wanting to cheer Rose up after her gloomy morning, Jack had taken her to the park where they got ice cream from a nearby vendor. After strolling through the lush greenness of the park and feeding the ducks in the pond, they had headed down the road to the local Movie Theater. After discovering Rose's ambitions of becoming an actress, Jack had insisted that they see one of the current films. From the moment they purchased their tickets until the time when they left the theater laughing and reminiscing, Rose was in complete awe. This whole new business of acting in films drew Rose in like a fish on a hook. Everything about it seemed absolutely amazing to her.

Jack and Rose ended up walking back through the park to where they were now, enjoying the sunset gleaming over the trees. The day had just flown right by them. It was like the saying "Time flies when you're having fun".

"Jack?"

Jack turned his head away from the setting sun to look at Rose. "Hmm?"

"What were you doing in that part of town this morning?"

Jack's face turned serious. "I was visiting an old friend of my mother's. Her name's Elizabeth Camden. She used to live in Chippewa Falls but moved back east after her husband died years ago. She's just a sweet little old lady who has no one to talk to anymore. So I make sure that I visit her every week. I'll talk to her, cook her dinner, escort her around town or help her with whatever else she needs. Since she doesn't have a lot of money anymore and often times gets sick, I make sure she has proper medical treatment and me to stay at her bedside until she gets better again. I'm just there to look out and care for her. Heaven knows she doesn't have much time left on this earth, at least that's what the doctor said. I want to make sure her last years of life are happy ones."

Rose's eyes misted as she looked over at her companion. She had never heard anyone do such a thing before, let alone a wealthy young man help a poor old lady. Rose's patted Jack's hand as she replied, "That's very kind of you Jack. I'm proud of you for doing such an honorable thing. Most people would just turn the other way and ignore the situation. But you…you didn’t."

"Thank you Rose."

She smiled and looked back over to where the sun had long ago set. Rose looked back at Jack. He watched as her beautiful green eyes seemed to dance in the dim light. And that's when an idea hit him. Jack stood up and grabbed Rose's arm, motioning for her to get up and follow him.

"What?" Rose asked a bit dumbfounded.

"I have an idea. Come on…"
