The next morning, Jack and Rose went down to their safety deposit box. They were back at the apartment by 10:45, so they decided to go talk to Kaitlyn and James. By about 11:45, Jack and Rose had a quick lunch and sat in the living room, waiting for the inevitable to happen. 12:00 Chimed on the clock. Rose went back to the bedroom to where the necklace was carefully sitting in a box. She took one last look at it. There were so many memories that it held. She could care less about losing the gem, but the memories that she and Jack had shared were priceless.
By 12:05 a loud knock rapped on the door. Both Jack and Rose jumped from their seats. The door swung open before Jack could even get to it. Cal and a younger man walked in, saying nothing.
"Well, where is it?" Cal said matter of factly.
"Right here." Rose said as she handed the box to Cal.
"Ah, yes. Well, I better be going now. I have some business to do." Cal said as he pulled out the necklace and held it up to the light. Cal then turned to the door to leave, but Rose stopped him.
"Wait! How will I know that you won't tell anyone of our survival?"
Cal thought about this for a moment then replied "Hmm, Rose is displeased. What to do? I know." He said as he pulled out piece of paper from his coat. He began writing on it. "I'm a business man as you know. I'm used to stubborn customers. Here's a written agreement. I promise you that I'll never speak a word of it to anyone."
"What about your little friend there?" Rose said as she pointed to the young man.
"Well, you haven't changed a bit Rose. Just as stubborn and as hopeless as you've always been. You're not as dumb as I thought you were. Here Max, sign this." Max gave a look of disgust then signed it. "Well, here you are. Satisfied?"
"For the moment." Rose said as she took the paper and read it carefully.
"Well, like I said, we'd better be going. So long." Cal said as he tipped his hat and walked out the door.
After they had left, Jack and Rose sighed in relief. They watched Cal walk down the street, just to make sure he was really gone.
"Well, that settles it." Jack said as he threw himself down on the couch.
"Jack, I don't feel safe here any more. That was too easy. I know Cal, he's got something up his sleeve. I just know it! We have to move. There's no way around it. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells just knowing that he knows all about us."
"Well, where exactly do you want to go?"
"I don't know. I had a few places in mind. Let's see, when is the earliest possible time that we can leave?"
"Well, we'd need to give a notice to Mr. Turner and my boss, so that would leave us at a week to two weeks from now. Are you sure about this?"
"Jack, we can't live our lives always being afraid of whose going to find us next. We just can't. It's no way to live."
"Well, I certainly agree with that. If that's what you want, we'll do it."
"Thank you Jack. You're so good to me." Rose said as she wrapped her arms around him. "I'm going over to see Kaitlyn. I need to talk to her. Wanna come?"
"Sure. I've been meaning to talk to James myself."
Rose and Kaitlyn went out for a walk, leaving Jack and James alone in the apartment to talk. Of course the idea of moving wasn't exactly a praised idea by Kaitlyn.
"Hey James?" Jack said nervously.
"Yeah?"
"My anniversary's comin' up, and to tell you the truth, I haven't the slightest idea of what to get Rose."
"Oh, trust me, I know how you feel. At least YOU didn't forget. On my first anniversary, I completely forgot. I felt so bad. I ended up rushing to a little shop in town to buy some flowers, then I ran all the way down to the next town, which was about 10 miles down the road, to find a nice place for us to stay. Let me remind you, that at the time that all this happened, we were still living in the middle of nowhere. Ah anyway, you always have to remember these kinds of things. Women get all worked up over it if you don't. Let's see, you have to remember Valentine's day, that's the 14th of February, her birthday, your anniversary, and a bunch of other dates that never seem to make sense. First of all, women like sweet, romantic kind of gifts. No camping, no sports, and especially nothing that requires too much physical activity. You remember those basic rules and you'll be set for life. You have to find something that has a special meaning to it. Something that shows that you really care. Find something that maybe reminds her of something special that you guys did or even talked about."
"Hmm, ya know, I think I have the perfect idea! Ya know how when we were on Titanic, we talked about riding horses on the beach in Santa Monica? Well, why don't I take her there? On a little trip. She's been bugging me about going there someday ever since."
"Perfect! Hey, when is your anniversary anyway?"
"Next Saturday, why?"
"Well, I was just thinkin', you guys are talkin' about moving about the same time. Why don't you surprise her by buying the tickets to California? She'll think you're going one place, when ACTUALLY, your going to California for a little…detour."
"That's great! James, you're a genius! We'll leave Saturday."
"Man, I sure am going to miss you two. Ya know, Kaitlyn has been telling me lately about how she wants to go to California. Be an actress she says. Women."
"How funny! Rose has always wanted to be an actress!"
"Hey there fella, your wife better not have been given any ideas!" James said jokingly.
"Hey, I can't exactly complain. If she wants to be an actress, then let her be an actress. There's nothin' wrong with living your dream."
"Wow, you sure do understand people."
"I guess. Hey, where did those two go anyway?"
"I don't know. All that I heard was 'I'm going out with Rose for a walk. Don't worry about us. Bye' "
"Well, since they probably won't be back for another good 2 hours or so, knowing them, how about we go get those train tickets."
"Oh, that's a good idea. Come on."
Jack grabbed his jacket and they both went to the train station to buy tickets for California.
