Random thoughts from 20th Century Fox Mexico Theatrical's Marketing Director.
Entry for January 10, 2008

Yesterday I attended the funeral of the wife of Philip Alexander, General Manager for Walt Disney and Sony Pictures in Mexico. Her second last name (in Mexico we have two last names, the first one is our father's first last name and the second one is our mother's first last name... a bit confusing for those who are not familiar with this) was Llera, same as me. Funny thing, because my last name is not very common. It turns out if she was related to me, neither me nor any of my close family knows about it, but some people at the funeral assumed we were and gave me condolensces, which felt terrible since I barely knew her. However I do share their pain, I know her husband from industry related events and I know they were fine people (she also left a 14 year old daughter behind). Nobody, especially them, deserves such a tragedy in their lives.

She was murdered and found dead inside of her car yesterday morning under shady circumstances. They probably tried to kidnap her, however since she was a journalist there have been sordid stories popping up on the news that they also don't deserve (there's even a suicide version, which is stupid since she was shot twice on the head).

This made me ponder on the reality of our world, where we still live as savages killing each other. Then I came back to my senses and remembered in the end, unfortunately, we are still animals and our worst predator. This gives the world some horrible corners, but we must not let that take away the beauty that is also there. We have to keep on moving and trying to focus on the positive, be thankful for the time we share with the people we love and, dare I quote the old cliché, seize the moment.

Two weeks ago I was in Disney World watching the fireworks with my wide eyed kids. Yesterday I was witnessing a horrible tragedy that could have happened to me. Such is life. We must strive to make a better world for us, fight against insecurity, violence and evil (which will always be there) but also remember to enjoy the precious beautiful moments we are allowed to enjoy. That's the nature of our lives, we must learn to live with it.

Have a great week.
