Automatic Fanatic
I found this thread while searching for some info about auto trannies. Anyway, I thought I'd share some info...
I swapped in a B18B and the 4spd auto tranny into my del Sol. A couple weeks ago I went to the track. With a quarter tank of 87 octane, I weighed in at exactly 2500lbs. That auto tranny sure is a heavy hunk of metal! That weigh was also with full interior plus spare, and does not include my own weigh (170lbs).
The temperature was around 90 deg, over 90% humidity, but pretty much at sea level in Tampa. I made 10 runs down the track, but I'll just describe my best launch. Here we go:
My friend had a bone stock del Sol VTEC. We both drove around the water and did no burn out. I hear him winding up his rpms as usual. This was our 3rd run of the day. So I decided what the hell, put the shifter in Neutral, and slowly revved my own engine up to 6000rpms. As the yellow lights started to change, I waited like half a second, then slammed the shift lever all the way back and floored it hard!
Eventually my tires grabbed and I roared forward. I was a little shocked and even let up on the gas a bit. Then I realized I was neck and neck with my friends VTEC. He got the better launch, but I kind of jumped forward and was next to him for a little while. About half way down the track, he starts to pull ahead of me, thanks to his VTEC no doubt.
Now for the numbers:
R/T = 1.015 (6000rpms is way too high <grin>, I think about 4500-5000 is better)
60' = 2.533
330 = 6.873
1/8 = 10.517
MPH = 67.43
1000 = 13.729
1/4 = 16.451
MPH = 82.45
I did try another launch at closer to 5000rpms. I know it doesn't really matter, but just for the record, the R/T was better (at 0.793 -- which is still bad). I managed a 60' of 2.482, but the quarter time ended up being 16.684 @ 81.62
My friend said his VTEC did a 16.3sec, and he's a good driver. His old VTEC was getting 14.8 all motor and street tires (but it got wrecked a couple months ago).
I figure I can easily take off around 100lbs (passenger seat = 35lbs, spare tire = 30lbs, rear bumper reinforcement about 30lbs). But my friend and I wanted a fair comparison, so we both had full interior, etc. And we both have P/S and A/C.
Here is the other junk I had:
- Sparkco 9.5mm plug wires (junk, I'm back to OEM wires now)
- DC Sport 4-2-1 two piece header
- Tanabe G-Power exhaust (loud as fok!)
- Neuspeed Race with Koni Yellow shocks
- Generic short intake
Well, I was expecting better times, but at least I know my times are real.
Last Friday I installed Skunk2 cam gears and AEM underdrive pulleys (though I haven't notice any immediate gains on the street). I could use lighter wheels (I currently have 18 pounder 15" TSW's). And probably a new cat. conv. would help a little, I still have my stock one which has over 105k miles. Too lazy to put in a straight pipe when I'm at the track. And a cold air intake would definately help.
Anyway, after tuning the cam gears, having the new pulleys, new wheels and a little weight reduction, I'm pretty confident I can hit high 15s in this horrible Florida heat. Maybe mid 15s come winter
I haven't met anyone (yet) who has actually used anything from Level10. Everyone just talks about it. A friend of mine has a B18B and 4spd auto in his Civic, and he just got done installing a turbo kit. He says he's got it running and he loves the easy passing power. I think it's just 5psi. He lives a couple hours away from me, in Jacksonville. So I just have to take his word for it. But he knows his shit and does his own work.
I'm saving up for what I want to do next. Either try mating a CRV motor to the LS auto tranny, or actually try the performance torque converter from Level10. But I hate to be a guinea pig for them. Suppose I could talk them into a sponsorship?
