So what happens when you combine the artistic creativity of two very different directors?...That's right, A.I. This highly anticipated film falls very short of anything resembling a good movie. The late Stanley Kubrick sat on this script for years because he couldn't figure out how to make it work. When he finally decided there was nothing he could do with it, presumably thinking it needed a different touch, he turned over the script to Steven Spielberg.

I really can't imagine what was going thru his head. Where Kubrick is dark and moody, Spielberg is light and happy. Someone like David Lynch probably could've done more with it. So, what we end up with is a movie that feels like it was written by two different people. Spielberg sat on the script until after Kubrick passed. One can only assume he was waiting so he could make some Spielberg-esque changes without insulting Mr. Kubrick.

The audience can tell too that two very different men created this story. The movie jars you by jerking back and forth between the ever so happy Spielberg moments to the dark and depressing moments by Kubrick. The movie is way too jarring to ever let the audience get interested.

Haley Joel is decent but nothing special. Really the only one who does a lot with what they were given was Jude Law. William Hurt's character is unnecessary. He could've been used to make the movie less depressing by changing the ending to include him, unfortunately either Spielberg wasn't willing to make the necessary changes or he didn't think of them. However, he was willing to add in his version of a happy ending. You think the movie's over...where Kubrick most likely originally wanted the movie to end, but then thirty more minutes followed of a ridiculous story line involving cloning and aliens.

This movie is less moving and more of a joke than it should've been. There was a reason Kubrick never made this movie...it wasn't ready to be made and it still isn't. Unfortunately Spielberg went ahead with a project before the script was ready. We're stuck watching a sometimes dark, sometimes overly happy movie about a robot boy looking for a mother to love him. As if the Pinocchio-like story isn't enough, we even get a silly reference to the Blue Fairy from the classic tale. I rolled my eyes on more than one occasion. So, we're left with a disappointing movie that has more flaws than good points. Don't pay money for this, don't rent it, don't waste your time either on this drawn out boring flick.
