Well, for those of you who didn't already know, this movie was spawned by the french novel
Les Liaisons Dangereux, which also inspired movies like Valmont starring Annette Benning
or the superior version Dangerous Liaisons starring Michelle Pfeiffer, John Malkovich,
Glenn Close, Uma Thurman, Swoozie Kurtz and Keanu Reeves. Unlike the past movies made this
movie took a new approach. They made this a modern day version and cast it much younger
with fresh upcoming stars like Ryan Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I thought there were very interesting touches to this already great story. I also liked
that Swoozie Kurtz made an appearance as Phillipe's psychiatrist: kind of an homage to
Dangerous Liaisons. I thought the acting was decent. I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is the
star in this film. For any of you who have seen Dangerous Liaisons you'll notice that Ryan
Phillipe seems to be copying John Malkovich's depiction of Vicomte de Valmont. With good
reason of course, Malkovich was excellent. However it does get a little old when you hear
the same lines getting delivered the exact same way, i.e. "You mean nothing to
me." I know it seems like a short phrase but it happens to be a very crucial line and
seeing Ryan Phillipe even change the way his voice sounds to virtually imitate Malkovich
is a tad disappointing. But heck, if you're gonna rip off of someone you might as well do
it from the best. There were a few scenes that were certainly thrown in there for the male
audiences but there were some in there for the females as well, so it balanced out. This
is a great twisted story of love, revenge, deception and all the great things that make a
movie good. This representation of this great story isn't bad, but if you want to see a
version with better acting overall (minus Keanu Reeves) then watch Dangerous Liaisons.
P.S. this is not a movie for the kiddies.
