I was very interested in seeing this movie. I'm someone who doesn't mind period movies at all. I can sit through the longest epics in the oldest times and it doesn't bother me. I really wanted to see this after the Oscar hype. However, this movie didn't meet up to my expectations. I thought it was long and choppy. I thought the acting was WONDERFUL and that's the best thing I can say about it. What was really lacking was the script. After seeing the movie I wonder if the story is interesting enough to have made a movie about it and after much thought I finally decided, yes it was but the script did it no justice. The director was no help either. This is not to say that the lines or scenes are unbelievable. Actually they are, there just aren't enough dramatic scenes to pull the audience into the story. Even the dramatic scenes involving Joseph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett are short and could've been SO much better. I really believed had there been more scenes between them showing how they are torn and had the few scenes they had shown been drawn out the movie would've been much more appealing. As it stands I think the costumes, set and music are wonderful. The cinematography is decent and the acting is great. Other than that I just don't think there's much of an appealing story there. It's interesting and that's why it gets such a high grade and the acting definately saves what little quality the script contains. If you enjoy period movies you might like this. If you aren't really a fan of them and only excellent films like Braveheart make them worth watching, then this isn't a film for you. |
