Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

I was not a child that grew up on the Grinch. At Christmas time I watched Miracle on 34th Street (the original, not the hack job remake) and It's a Wonderful Life. But almost everyone knows OF the Grinch and it's creator, Dr. Seuss. The task of creating a live version of the story was quite a daring act in my opinion. First off, WONDERFUL set design. Creative touches all over the place that make the movie that much better. It brings the story to life. Next, the make-up job on all the Who's of Whoville and of course the magnificent job on Jim Carrey. Speaking of Jim Carrey, I'm not a fan but I loved him in this movie. He was spectacular. Jim Carrey is such a powerful presence that it is hard for him to cover up his own personality with that of someone else. After 3/4ths of the movie was over I had to remind myself that he was the Grinch because he became the Grinch and Jim Carrey was nowhere to be found. (thankfully) Newcomer Taylor Momsen was wonderful as well as Cindy Lou Who. She was perfect for the angelic, sweet, young girl who believes in the Grinch. Her singing could improve, but it was bearable considering her age. Also, I thought that Christine Baranski did a wonderful job as well. I might as well say that the acting was good all around. The writing was good, the set was wonderful, the makeup was great. Just well well well done. I left the theater with warm fuzzies. Ok, so where did the other half star go to? This is the first time that I can recall where my grade was affected by other people's reaction to the film. Everyone I went with liked the film, but not everyone loved the film. I think that you should go into it expecting exactly what it is, a cute, warm fuzzy like movie that is just a live version of the cartoon. Expect the story to be silly and the acting to be over the top and you will love the movie like I did. But since I guess a few people weren't prepared for what they got and didn't love the movie like me and another friend of mine, it loses half a star. But I still highly recommend the film for people who don't have a problem with this genre because it's an exceptionall well done movie. For those of you who are die-hard Grinch / Seuss fans, don't worry. They went thru such pain staking processes to lengthen the short movie and even shorter book into a 2 hour film that they even brought in Dr. Seuss' widow to approve everything. Jim Carrey even had to audition for her. So, don't worry. What's new was done in Seuss-like style. |
