The Mummy Returns

The cast is just as good, or bad depending on how you look at it, as they were originally. The chemistry with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is still just as good. To up the stakes a bit and make you want to watch this movie some impressive fight sequences have been added, and there's nothing like a scene with two girls kicking butt (see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). There's another new member to the cast, Freddie Boath who plays the son, Alex of Brendan Fraser and Weisz. He's pretty annoying, and not a very good actor. I think they could've done better. Arnold Vosloo comes back as the Mummy and does a good job and manages to add another level to his character. Arnold is a cool character in interviews and I would like to see him in other, lighter roles. Patricia Velazquez returns as Anck-Su-Namun and is alright, but not great. And you know John Hannah had to return as the irresponsible brother of Weisz. There's something comforting in seeing the same cast. One major problem with the film is the fact that they took what was good about the first one, the special effects, and went way over the top with this one. They suffered from the "If it worked once, lets do it again 10 times bigger" syndrome. The movie suffers for it, note the Scorpion King's climactic scene. And as I said before the movie also has some pretty silly scenes just like the first one, case in point...the hot air balloon or whatever you want to call it. The movie's strong point is the additions made to the original
story. They manage to add in more depth without really altering the first story. Okay, so
Brendan Fraser being a sacred protector is pretty dumb, but the rest is good. |
