Now I am a huge Dean Koontz fan. I've been reading his books for over 10 years. Phantoms was one of my favorites by him so you know that I had to see this movie. I was excited because I was hoping this one wouldn't be butchered like Watchers (another great Koontz book turned into a movie starring Corey Haim) because Koontz was actually doing the screenplay himself. Unfortunately, as good as he might be at writing books, he is equally bad at writing screenplays. He left out some of the best parts of the book. He changed characters that would have been more effective to the story had they stayed the way he originally wrote them. I also thought the film was miscast. The younger sister is too old and not angelic enough (which is how he originally wrote it) and Ben Affleck is too young to pull of the part of the authoritative sheriff. Also, I don't know if it's a problem in editing or writing but the film is jumpy and if I hadn't read the book I would be lost and when I finally would figure out what the heck was going on it would be completely unbelievable. If you're in the mood for a good story, read the book. Do not watch the movie. The only reason to see this movie is to see how ridiculous Ben Affleck looks in a cowboy hat. |
