This movie turned out to be just as I expected. Yeah, sure it's cute...but it's not great. It's not near as fun as Pretty Woman or near as witty as Notting Hill. However, this movie still is very enjoyable. I am an extreme fan of romantic comedies so it's no shocker that I enjoyed this. This movie's major asset was obvious from the get go, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere have an unbelievable on-screen chemisty. They're SOOOO cute together. I adore both of these actors. They are able to make their characters so real by just doing simple things like giving little looks and expressions or changing the tone of their voices in such a way that they become real. These are true signs of wonderful talent. I have only a few major complaints...and they're not REALLY that big. First of all, Richard Gere's character is such a jerk in the beginning of the movie, I want to know why he makes this massive transformation? It seems like such a solid part of his persona that I have trouble imagining that being attracted to this woman changes his entire personality...but this isn't a major flaw. I'm really nitpicking. Next, I found a few little holes in the story. For example, Richard Gere's character is known for having women hate him. He writes biased articles about them and generalizes them. Their hatred of him is shown on screen by women randomly hitting him with rolled up newspapers as he walks down the street. However, he easily charms EVERY woman in town. Also, I had so much trouble believing that the people who supposedly love Julia Roberts, her family and fiance, so eagerly take Richard Gere into their home as if he was one of the family. Also, her friends take him in as well. For those of you who don't know the story...Richard Gere is a reporter for USA Today. He writes an article about Julia Roberts who is known for leaving grooms at the alter...literally! She is, of course, humiliated that her life story has been exaggerated, stretched, and distorted publicly for the whole world to gawk at. When she writes the editor of the paper telling her of the immense falicies in the article, Gere is fired and he travels to her home town to see her upcoming wedding in hopes of vindication when she will hopefully leave the new groom at the alter. Ok, with that out of the way, as I was saying, I don't believe that her family and friends would greet him with open arms. Ok, with those few complaints out of the way I'll mention this movies biggest problem...it's real formulaic. Opposites attract, there are obstacles, you think they won't make it, but of course they do and everyone lives happily ever after. This movie doesn't rely on any creative humor for the most part. All of the jokes are completely random silly things. Nothing real shocking. However this movie does have some strong points. All of the characters are very charming. I was especially impressed with Joan Cusack. Also, Hector Elizondo, who played the manager of the hotel in Pretty Woman, plays Richard Gere's best friend in this movie. He also does a really good job. I enjoyed most of the supporting cast as well as the leads. All in all, this movie is cute but predictable. If you go in expecting to enjoy yourself, you will. Just go in with the right attitude, not expecting a movie as good as Pretty Woman and you'll be fine. This movie is sweet, good performances, so-so writing. It's worth watching, but not worth going out of your way for. |
