I knew I wanted to see this movie, if only for one reason...Hugh Jackman. I loved him in X-Men and I'm happy to see his career has taken off and he has many more movies lined up. I thought he was very good and so I wanted to see this, to see if he still did a decent job. I don't really like Ashley Judd that much, but I don't really dislike her. I do like Greg Kinnear, although I've only seen two movies with him in it. Ellen Barkin is okay, but she wasn't something that made me want to see this.

So, let's get right to it...what was good and bad about this movie. Let's start with the bad, get it out of the way. This movie is pretty depressing at parts. You feel so sorry for the clueless Ashley Judd who is so obviously heart-broken that you feel uncomfortable. But, what I thought this movie was really lacking was some slight improvements on decent scenes. For example, Ashley Judd after weeks of confinement forces herself to go out on New Year's, having accepted an open invitation from her roommate, played by Jackman. She shows up, it's midnight, she can't find him and she begins to cry and she starts to leave. Just as she's leaving, you see Jackman's look of excitement in having seen her and he calls her name. Of course it's midnight and you can't hear anyone, so he continues yelling her name. He fights his way thru the crowd trying to get to her before she gets out the door. But he doesn't get to her and the audience is left unsatisfied. I would've much preferred a kiss earlier on in the movie. It doesn't have to be super romantic because, after all, it is New Year's, it's customary. It's an easy way to show affection building and bring in some awkward tenderness without breaking that barrier. And then, what's with the ending? It just kind of happens. Oh, I love you, let me chase you and kiss you, end of story. Poorly, poorly developed. And I'm sorry, Ashley's cover when she's writing the article, is ridiculous and WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?!?!

Ahh, now for the good things. This is the first movie I've ever seen that was directed by Tony Goldwyn. You may remember him as the bad guy in Ghost. He does a nice job for someone who only had 2 films under his belt. Hugh Jackman and Ashley were fantastic together. Jackman pulled off the leading male no problem. Kinnear was great as usual. He played a role similar to that in Sabrina, which is why they probably thought of him. There are some very tender scenes, i.e. the morning Jackman and Judd wake up together. It also brings in the right amount of humor.

This movie is cute, but it's not great and it needs help with the end. Other than that, it's nice. It'd make a decent date movie, but I might wait for rent.
