Birkoff is the computer genius, and his talents are instrumental in the Section One.

A young wiseguy, and he looks more apt to crack a joke than worlds most secret and complex codes.

The most overtly  oconoclastic and cynical person in the group, he is still devoted to its goals, even though he has a few of his own which demand attention.
