WHAT LIES BENEATH PG-13 Starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer
Eric says: *** (3) In my preview thoughts, I assumed that this would play out like a mix between Fatal Attraction and The Sixth Sense. That did not leave me eagerly anticipating it. When will I learn to start blindly trusting my instincts? From the beginning, Pfeiffer and Ford emit a surprising lack of chemistry as a couple trying to cope after their daughter flies the coop for college. One of the first scenes involves the two in an amorous encounter that feels unexpectedly tepid. The real killer of this film, though, is an ode to the work of Alfred Hitchcock that only serves to show how poor WLB really is. From the Rear Window-style set-up, to the score, the abrupt camera angles, the male lead being named "Norman", and a bathtub scene where the female lead falls, lurching over the side pf the tub, we are told to invoke Hitchcock, then reminded that we are seeing this instead. |
