The Masterpieces

Due to the great hoopla over the millenium, I think it will be interesting pointing out film masterpieces. Oh yes, I know everyone's doing it. But why should I be any different. Honestly, I don't know the criteria for a masterpiece. I don't think there is any film that is completely flawless. There are always those missteps, minor or not. The masterpieces are those that, in my book, seem to have no flaws. When you look back on the film, the errors may be detectable but you forget them because they are so inconsequential to the greatness of the film. Singin' in the Rain is definitely one of my all-time favorites. Yes, it has flaws. And I don't care.

Initially, I was going to put this site up only for a few weeks and take it down after the arrival of the year 2000. Now I plan to make it an on-going thing because I can't possibly write reviews for all my favorite films in a few short weeks. I doubt many will argue over the near perfection of The Wizard of Oz, my first review for this page for no particular reason, but some of my picks may lie on the fence of movie history, between the world of the respected film and the ridiculed one.

Usually there is a difference between the films you enjoy and the films you recognize as masterpieces. In my mind, a masterpiece is that rare film that fuses enjoyment with depth or creativity and artistry. Only those films will be featured here.

If you feel compelled to write me about your favorites, I would be more than glad to read them.
