 Thomas "Beans" Bowles (Saxophonist)

Helped to shape the direction of Motown Records in the 60s. "Beans" (as his close friends refer to him as) died January 28, 2000,  of an extended bout with prostate cancer.  He was 73.

Bowles worked various jazz clubs, including Sonny Wilson's Forest Club and the Flame Showbar where he played with Billie Holiday and Billy Eckstine before landing a management job with Motown.

A pioneer of Motown music, Beans was one of the major tools to the success of the Motown Revues, developed in the 60's. A road manager for the tours, Beans negotiated many of the venues that made up the Motown Revue itinerary.

Bowles contributed to several classic Motown hits, including Marvin Gaye's ``Stubborn Kind of Fellow'' and ``What's Goin On,'' Martha and the Vandellas' ``Heat Wave'' and the Supremes' hit ``Baby Love.''

Bowles created the ``Motown Revue'' along with Ester Gordy Edwards, a sister of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr.

After a car accident on one of the tours, that left one member dead, and Beans hospitalized. Beans went on the establish his music career in the world of jazz. Becoming one of Detroit's great masters of jazz, Beans has given over 50 years of musical pleasure.

``He left quite a legacy here,'' Teddy Harris, a Motown pianist, said of Bowles. ``It's going to be a big hole left in the musical community. He's going to be quite missed around here.''

Bowles moved to Detroit from his hometown of South Bend, Ind., in 1944 to study at Wayne State University. He then left school and played in a Navy band, which played nationally and internationally.
