According to the Ancient Greek poet Homer, King Odysseus of Ithaki closed his sailors' ears because he was afraid that the sounds of the singing mermaids would seduce them and they would never arrive to his Kingdom. He even ordered his men to bind him on his ship's mast to protect himself from the dangerous charm of these extra-ordinary girls that used to live by the coast and were a temptation for any passing by ship's crew! Hundreds of years later, when King Alexander the Great of Macedonian died, his sister became a mermaid (according to the Greek legends) who used to stop the ships and ask the sailors if the King was still alive! If the sailors would say "yes" her happy songs were heard all over the sea and she was protecting the ship from all evil spirits, but if they would say "no" she would become the saddest creature in the world and the ship was convicted to sink. No matter what the case is, in all legends people admire mermaids for their unmatched beauty and are scared of their super natural powers. Still, in all legends it is obvious that all mermaids are asking for is compassion, and love. Only when people were getting mean to them they would get nasty!
