Some faces are familiar. Some are new. And yet others are both familiar and new at the same time. These are the characters that drove the action and plot of the feature film forward, either through humorous hi-jinks, dependable support, or even treachery.
Zordon Zordon of Eltar, the mentor and founder of the Power Rangers of Earth has gone through a surprising change for the film. In the series, Zordon is portrayed as a being trapped in another dimension, thanks to Rita's cunning magic. Whenever his crystal cylinder is damaged, he loses contact with our dimension. However, in the film, it is revealed that Zordon actually resides within the cylinder. When Ivan Ooze attacks the Command Center, he breaches the crystal casing, leaving Zordon vulnerable to rapid aging that would have killed him, had the Rangers not come to his timely rescue.
Alpha 5 Alpha 5, Zordon's trusted assistant, also has gone through a change. Alpha has grown in height, and sports a new, sleeker design than his series counterpart. Still, he provides the same agitated demeanor and crucial information at the right time. He advises the Rangers of the legendary Great Power on Phaedos, and rigs the damaged transporter to send them on their journey.
Bulk and Skull Not surprisingly, the two punks make their silver screen debut in this film. When they're not trying to leap from flying planes without parachutes, these two likeable misfits spent their time hanging out with the oozed-out teenagers of Angel Grove. They partnered with the youths to save their parents, and defy Ivan Ooze's mental subversion. And, of course, they expected all the credit.
Fred Kelman Fred turned out to be quite the hero. A young boy from Angel Grove, Fred was put to the test when he discovered that all the parents in Angel Grove had been warped by Ivan Ooze to do his bidding. He followed the trail of the missing parents to the rock quarry, where the hypnotized adults labored to reconstruct Ivan's deadly Ectomorphicon monsters. He bravely tried to save his father on his own, and when it became clear that he needed help, he led the charge of Angel Grove youths to rescue their parents and save the world.
Lord Zedd Lord Zedd, the Emperor of Evil, stood much taller in this feature film. In addition, the increased special effects budget gave him the creepy addition of having his exposed brain actually pulse as he thought. Still, despite the new-and-improved look, Zedd was much the same. After centuries of searching, Zedd discovered the Hyperlock Chamber which held Ivan Ooze (which, incidentally, was actually opened and uncovered by a batch of unwary construction workers). And not surprisingly, he got much more than he bargained for, as Ivan Ooze moved to take his throne.
Rita Repulsa For the record, this is the third face of our favorite irritating witch. Yet the new appearance didn't hinder her impatient jabber in the least. Her entire contribution to the film can be summarized in stinging insults directed at her husband, and screeching complaints every time she came on screen. Thankfully, Ivan put her into her place, tossing a wad of ooze on her face and silencing her for the rest of the film.
This fierce warrior may have glowing eyes and a more solid suit of armor, but underneath he's the same treacherous beast. Mere seconds after Rita and Zedd were confined in a snow crystal, Goldar swore his allegiance to Ivan Ooze. His role in Ivan's ultimate scheme seemed to be very peripheral, as Goldar did little other than keep Ivan company and boss around the human workers.
Mordant Mordant, the chubby boar lackey to Rita and Zedd, is a surpising addition to the Lunar Crew. I wholly believe his sole purpose is to give Goldar someone to interact with. Thankfully he isn't as insipid as Rito Revolto or Squatt and Baboo, who I would consider his series-equivalents. We never saw him actually do anything besides hide and get yelled at by Goldar, but he did have a few sentences of dialogue.
Oozeling Ivan Ooze's first attempt at a foot soldier. He created the Oozelings from electricity, and sent the swarms against the Power Rangers at their first encounter. The Oozelings are comparable to Putties, though much stronger. The Rangers were forced to Morph in order to defeat them, but once they summoned their powers, the Oozelings posed little threat.
Tengu Warriors Ivan Ooze's second group of foot soldiers. These were created from ooze, and were sent after the Rangers once Ivan realized they had left the planet to seek power elsewhere. The Tengu flock defied several laws of nature by flying through space, and actually catching up with the teleporting Power Rangers. Once on Phaedos, the Tengu overwhelmed the Rangers easily, dodging their attacks with impressive speed and agility. They were finally defeated by Dulcea, whose Whistling Sticks sent them screeching in pain.
The Rock Creatures These three sentinels guarded the Monolith, in which the Great Power resided. By seeking the Great Power, the Ninjetti Rangers awoke the three deadly creatures, and were forced to outsmart and outmaneuver them. The creatures were durable and hard-hitting, yet had little intelligence. Once they were defeated, the Rangers were granted access to their new powers.
Scorpitron This is Ivan's Ectomorphicon creature, fashioned after a Scorpion. This creature fired energy blasts from it's upraised tail, sending many citizens of Angel Grove into a panic. The Falcon Zord detonated the machine with its wing rockets.
Hornitor The Hornitor is Ivan's other Ectomorphicon, designed to resemble a hornet. This creature survived longer than the Scorpitron, and was actually used as body for Ooze in which the villain battled the Ninja Megazord. The Hornitor, and Ivan himself, were destroyed by Ryan's comet. |
