Author’s Note: This was proofed by Julia, so thanks to her. :) This very short vignette is about probably the most written about period in PR history: Tommy’s feelings about Kimberly’s letter. If you’re tired of reading stories like this, I’m sorry. I wanted to take my turn to write it. *Grin* It takes place after “There’s No Business Like Snow Business Part III”. This story is about Tommy and his memories of Kimberly. It is dedicated to the memory of my cousin, who was also named Kimberly, who died suddenly in February of 1998. She was only 19. She is greatly missed by her family. And as the song says, we are all better for having known her. Please enjoy.
It was over. What was “it”? "It" was a lot of things actually. Mondo and Machina’s monster, the Defoliator, had finally been destroyed. The disastrous ski trip was over. Billy’s and Kat’s well-meaning, but failed attempts to fix him up with Heather were over. But at that moment, the only “it” that mattered to Tommy was his relationship with Kimberly. And it was, well... over.
Tommy sat by the lake, trying again to do what he had gone there only days before to do: to deal with the past. The first time had been right after he received Kim’s letter, less than a week ago. And now... now it looked as if everyone might finally give him the space he needed to think.
She was gone. After all they’d been through together, she had left him with only a note of good-bye.
From the moment he first saw her all those years ago, he knew that he would love her. But any chance they had of being together was interrupted by Rita when she turned him into her evil Green Ranger. But Kim had stood by him, not understanding his actions, but trying to help him. When the spell was broken, she and the other Rangers forgave him. They didn’t care what he had done while under the spell, but he could never forget.
With the sudden twists and turns in the life of a Ranger, he had never known where his road with her would lead. He had always been a loner. Then suddenly he was part of a team; and he liked it. He finally belonged somewhere.
But being the Green Ranger had been trying times. Whether his powers were stolen, fading, or gone completely, Kimberly had been there for him. When he felt the most isolated, she was always there to let him know he still belonged, to let him know she loved him no matter what. Whatever pain he was in, she helped him through it.
Theirs had been anything but a typical high school romance. The life and death situations they faced every day often made them see things more clearly. Nothing should be taken for granted or taken lightly. They had cherished every moment they spent together.
Whenever he was down, she made him see the lighter side of things. Even with his moody nature, he could never stay depressed long when he was around her. She could light up a room with her smile, and she filled his life with happiness.
Even after she left to train in Florida for the Pan Global Games, she had still been his touchstone to reality. She was no longer with him physically, but she was always present in his heart. Both had felt sure that their love could survive the separation. “I guess we were wrong.” Tommy said to no one in particular.
She had been the light in his darkness, his reason to go on. And now, she had gone on... without him. She was thousands of miles away and she was with someone else. The reason why didn’t matter to him. If she had found her happiness with someone else, then he would step aside. Her happiness meant more to him than his own. He loved her enough to let her go.
Tommy stood as the sun was setting. Kimberly and he had watched that same sunset a thousand times. And now he would watch it alone...
Alone, at least for now. He had his friends and their support would help him through this. He knew life would go on as it had before. He was thankful for the time he had had with Kimberly. His all too brief time with her was worth the pain he suffered now. He wouldn’t trade that time for anything in the world. He felt he was a better, stronger person because she had been in his life. He wished her the best in this new chapter in her life. And he knew that in time, he would move on to the next chapter of his. Only time would tell him where and who it would lead him to. But he was up for the ride.
THE END
