From the All Music Guide (Linda Kohanov):
Guitarist Eric Tingstad and oboist Nancy Rumbel create music directly inspired by the chamber-jazz styles of Oregon and the Paul Winter Consort. After studying at Northwestern University, San Antonio-born Rumbel moved to New York. There she met oboist Paul McCandless (who played with the Winter Consort before helping to establish Oregon with guitarist Ralph Towner). McCandless put her in contact with Winter, and before she knew it, Rumbel herself was touring and recording with the Paul Winter Consort. After a five-year stint with the group, Rumbel dropped out to start a family when she met Eric Tingstad at an outdoor festival. The Seattle-based guitarist had been influenced by Oregon's Ralph Towner. Tingstad studied classical guitar in college and spent the better part of the '70s playing lead guitar in a Seattle progressive-rock band. In the '80s, however, he returned to the acoustic guitar and released two solo albums that established his popularity as a regional musician known for creating "Northwest Impressionism." When Rumbel moved to Washington, she and Tingstad agreed to collaborate.
They have since recorded a number of contemporary chamber-music-style albums for the Narada label. The musicians, who have a long history of environmental activism, often create albums with outdoor themes and have been known to give away tree seedlings at their live performances.

With Give and Take, Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel present their seventh collaborative album. These two fast friends share a commonality of interests beyond their finely-crafted compostions: a personal involvement in humanitarian and environmental issues, a passion for reading and a wry sense of humor. Here Eric's classical guitar and Nancy's work on oboe, English horn and ocarinas meld to make music that is warm, personal and inviting. Understated percussion gently flavors this outstanding album of refined, shared harmonies.

Tingstad and Rumbel's pastoral sound is a bit more aggressive on this album, due to a stronger rhythmic emphasis and the appearance of over a dozen guest artists. The overall effect, however, remains subtle, with snatches of oriental and South American influences mixed with the duo's usual fusion of classical and North American folk influences.

Tingstad and Rumbel, who have a couple of the best cuts on the Narada Christmas Collection, blend a spatial new age sensibility with straight melodic readings of traditional Christmas music, performed on acoustic string and wind instruments. Sometimes the exquisite technique is a little bloodless, but all in all, it's very well done.
