Here is a list of the ten films that promise to be the biggest, best or most successful films of 1997. I compiled this list using various sources, but the words are all mine!
(All the links in the following list will either take you to another page on that person/subject, or display a lovely picture for you to enjoy!
)
Batman and Robin: This time round sees George Clooney in the title role, with Chris O'Donnell once again playing Robin. Many think that Clooney will make a far more dashing caped crusader than Val Kilmer managed, and the baddies look set to be far more menacing. Arnie Schwarzenegger plays Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman stars as the seductive Poison Ivy who can kill with a single kiss. To help cope with these nasty villans, the writers have given Batman and Robin an extra helper in the form of Batgirl, played by the gorgeous Alicia Silverstone (which I have to say I am looking forward to!) For the obligatory love interest they have decided not to go for an actress, but have instead chosen the lovely Elle Macpherson. Batman certainly likes his women tall!
Contact: If you can't wait for the X-Files movie to come out, then this should do fine as a replacement. Jodie Foster and the rising star Matthew McConaughey are amongst the cast in this story of mankind's first official contact with Alien Life. Adapted from Carl Sagan's novel, this is the more serious film amongst the large number of alien related movies scheduled for release next year.
Hercules: The latest Disney animated film, this stars the voices of Danny De Vito and James Woods. This adaptation of the popular Greek myth promises to be bright and cheerful in the same mould as Aladdin.
The Lost World: Or Jurassic Park 2 as it could have ben called. I've read the book, which is absolutely brilliant, but this doesn't mean much as the original film didn't keep to the book at all. Jeff Goldblum continues his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm, the Chaos theorist, and the film is once again directed by Steven Spielberg. Some people are already saying that it won't be any good because it is just a blatant attempt to cash in on the original. However, the effects are bound to be amazing, and many people will go just because they liked the original!
Mars Attacks!: Now this is the one i'm waiting to see. The cast is very impressive, including Jack Nicholson and Glenn Close, and with Tim Burton directing it is sure to be very funny, if a little weird. This a very silly alien invasion spoof, and the aliens themselves are absolutely hilarious, so it's sure to be brilliant!
Michael: This unusual film stars John Travolta as a supposed Archangel living in Iowa. However, he isn't quite what you'd expect an angel to be, as he chain smokes, loves beer (my mate Bob would like him) and tends to swear a fair bit. The film aslo stars Bob Hoskins, John Hurt and Andie MacDowell.
Ransom: The latest Ron Howard film stars Mel Gibson as a successful millionare buisness man whose son is kidnapped. But rather than paying the ransom, he puts the money out as a reward on the head of the kidnapper. Also starring Rene Russo, and no doubt Ron's younger brother (of Gentle Ben fame) who always get's a cameo in all of Ron's films. This should be a good tense thriller with a fair bit of action thrown in!
The Saint: This is what Val Kilmer missed out on Batman for. He recreates the famous T.V. role of the very successful thief with a habit of giving away the money he steals to less fortunate people, like a modern day Robin Hood. Elizabeth Shue also stars (remember her from Karate Kid? Not a lot of people know that!!).
Star Wars: The coolest movie of all time (in my humble opinion) is re-released along with the 2 sequels with new computer-enhanced special effects and extra scenes. I know this is just an attempt to get interest in the three new prequels set for realease some time next Christmas (I think), but I personally think any excuse is a good excuse to show these classics again! I'm not even going to bother teling you who's in them, as I'm sure that you all know! (However, you may not know that my friend Chris' mum used to date the actor who played Chewbacca, ie: Peter Mayhew. So there you go!)
Starship Troopers: Bit of a corny name, but this big-budget space film teams Paul Verhoeven with many of the people who worked with him on the successful Robocop movie. Aliens are invading the Earth, and the dialogue is supposed to be very cheesy indeed, but the effects should be spectacular. It stars Michael Ironside and no-body else i've even heard of, but never mind!
So those are my top tips for next year. Keep your eyes peeled!
