This is THE classic science fiction movie of all time! It was made almost 50 years ago and is timeless.Its message to the inhabitants of Earth are as timely and sensible as they were back in 1951! It should never be remade because "If it ain't broke, don' fix it." besides, where would you find another actor to play Klaatu like Michael Rennie did. He was MAGNIFICENT!My favorite scene is at Professor Barnhardt's residence when all the electricity on Earth has been shut off. He asks his secretary Hilda if al this frightens her and makes her feel insecure.Her response is, "It certainly does!" to which the Professor answers, "That's GOOD Hilda, I'm glad!"

I started a topic on Mike Siegel's forum about memorable films. This one came to mind as one of the best I've seen regarding science fiction. How pertinent that an alien spaceship lands, causes a lot of distress among citizens, and then unites everyone in a unified cause. How advanced this film really was!

Thank you for your homage to The Day the Earth Stood Still...I was watching it (again) this evening on AMC and I am still struck by its power, particularly the scene at Arlington Cemetery. It is one of those rare films where all of the elements came toget er perfectly: the script, actors, music, director, and so on. If only a real Klaatu would happen to stop by....

The Day th Earth Stood Still is not only the greatest science fiction film in the history of Hollywood, but it has always been and will always be my very favorite film. Bernard Herrmann's eerie film score was the best ever, and has remained unmatched. Mic ael Rennie had one of Hollywood's most charismatic voices, and he played Klaatu with pristine succinctness. Despite today's advanced special effects technology, especially in sci-fi films, This 1951 classic has some of the best and most realistic special ffects, much more believable than today's computer matted images. As a professional actor, whenever I have to audition and give a monologue - I recite Kaatu's closing speech. I have memorized it because it has one of the most profound messages...that was head of its time...and remains as strong today.

Hey Great site! I found some great info from an old "Fantastic Films" magazine april '78. It has Klaatu's language translated, blue prints of the ship, Gort effects and more! in an old "Starlog" No.23 there's 6 pages of pictures and an interesting intervi w with Robert Wise who directed TDTESS (also the 1st Star Trek movie)do you know that they used a crane to hoist Patricia Neal so that GORT (Lock Martin) could carry her. If you look close as Gort starts to carry her to the ship you can see the wire just oe a second as it passes a glare on the wall.
