ROMEO AND
JULIET
Hollywood transplants the great love tragedy from Verona into the
contemporary Latin America. And lays it on thick with it
Already in her
lifetime an
angel: Juliet
(Claire Danes)
In thruth we've always known,
but nobody has ever told us as nicely as director Baz Luhrmann:
It was the postman who foozled the romance of the millenium. His
delivery note now flutters through the Mexican prairie while
Romeo and Juliet probably watch MTV in heaven.
During the rest of the movie
things are really happening in this shrill-colorful version of
the stage-classic. There, the Capulet- and the Montague-clan's
offsprings put up brutal fights in Mexico City, but shout at each
other the word "Sir" before shooting. In contrast to
the shocking zeitgeist-optics is original Shakespeare declaimed.
An exciting experiment which unfortunately crushes the love
story between Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes with its "picture-force".
Summary: Romeo and Juliet - an imposing stimulus-bombardment, that unfortunately sweeps away the witty starts as well as the big feelings.
Rating: quite okay (1 out of 3 stars)
