Drums make me happy. Whether or not they have the same effect on you depends upon whether or not you suck. Have at 'em, and don't call the cops, they're here for fun and happiness, not for money.
All the drum loops on this page are in fairly low resolution (11025KHz 16bit mono). This is intended to increase download speeds and prevent you from NOT buying the albums from whence these beats came. You should buy the Ultimate Breaks and Beats set of albums first, if you don't own it already. Also, the Funky Jams series and the Sound of Funk series are excellent. Pick them all up at DUSTY GROOVE, and tell 'em Mhat sent you so that they'll think I'm a real sweetie.
And if pure drumbreaks are more your style (that means you have some serious style), you owe it to yourself to check out UBIQUITY RECORDS' New Web Site and the DRUM CRAZY and TASTY BEATS series. With 20 (yes, TWENTY) PHATT tracks per CD, you simply CAN'T ask for better drum comps. I own them all, and every single one's a masterpiece. The Ubiquity folks are simply the best people you could ever hope to do business with, so go do some.

"Amen Brother"(47k) by The Winstons: Here's an Eric B. & Rakim beat for you. A very nice beat, very versatile, and can be put to much better (and less annoying) use than Eric B. & his little friend did.
"Apache"(180k) by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band: This is an old-school favorite, wicked crazy, and a surprisingly funky remake of an old surfing song. Hang ten, homey.
"Ashley's Roachclip"(53k) by Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers: "The beat that brought about the unfortunate rise of P.M. Dawn," it also brought about the unfortunate rise of Milli Vanilli, and the unfortunate resurrection of Duran Duran (and did the Spice Girls use this? I feel so bad for this drumbeat). This drumbeat is x-tra phat, even if it has been molested in the past. Peep the funkiest tamborine ever laid down on wax. But DON'T peep the later albums by Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers, that shit is FUC*ED UP!
"Black Grass"(49k) by Bad Bascomb: Slightly hoopty drum beat used by Special Ed ("special" is right...)and Wu-Tang. It's sort of Green Acres, but it's bumpin' nonetheless...
"Be Bop Boogie"(105k) by Hilton Felton: I heard this one for the first time recently, and it blew me away. And I'm a heavy-set person, so it takes quite a lot to blow me anywhere. Back to the beat, though... This one may seem deceptively commonplace at first, but if you turn it up a little, you'll hear that it fu*kin' grooves as hard as Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. Check it out, and worship me for sharing it with you.
"BOOM"(65k) by Roland: This is that BOOMY BASS drum from the Roland TR808 drum machine. Add this to your loops to make your car rattle and your neighbors try to have you evicted...
"Closed Hat"(9k) by Roland: This the Closed Hi-Hat sound from the Roland TR808 Drum Machine.
"Cowbell"(43k) by Roland: This is the Cowbell sound from the Roland TR808 Drum Machine (so That's what this sound was supposed to be all these years!).
"Clap"(71k) by Roland: Rounding out our selection of sounds from Roland's TR808 Drum Machine is the famous "Clap" sound. Does it sound like a clap to you? Sounds like pure '80s to me, dude, totally!
"Can I Be Your Squeeze?"(54k) by Chuck Carbo: VERY funky, New Orleans groove from funky (though repetitive) Chuck Carbo. This has been used by DJ Greyboy and myself, but mine sounded better... :)
"Can't You See"(103k) by Tower of Power: Here's an over-produced, yet funky, drum beat for you. It's not raw, but it's funky, tight, and modern sounding. Dave Garibaldi, the white drummer here, helps to protect the American white guy's image from our other embarrassing musical representatives like Kenny G, John Tesh, and P.M. Dawn...oops, he's not white... :)
"Chocolate Buttermilk"(90k) by Kool & The Gang: This is a crazy-fast breakbeat from Funky George Brown, Kool's kickin' skinsman. Similar to "Give It Up" (below) but faster, would be tha' shit as a break in a hip-hop mix. Check the mad styles.
"Don't Change Your Love"(56k) by The 5 Stairsteps with Cubie: Hip Hop Hooray. What more need I say? Peace & Chillitude to Dave'sRecords for straightening me out with this one.
"Do You Believe in Fate?"(68k) by Sir John Roberts: This is a relatively new one for me. I just thought you'd like it.
"Eighties Loop!"(57k) by ME: Here's my tribute to Mr. Dave's-Records, Sr. (or, "Dad", as we know him). It's a simple old-school beat I made out of TR808 sounds (all available on this page) and reflects "Dad's" appreciation of life's simpler pleasures. Duh, Da, Dee, you know... :)
"Fire Eater"(105k) by Rusty Bryant: This one's hard. A very funky drum solo, this is just a part, but definitely go grab a record with this track on it. This drummer can blow...I mean, he doesn't really blow, but he does that other stuff that drummers do, um, hitting and stuff...
"Funky Drummer"(52k) by James Brown (Drums by Clyde Stubblefield): Perhaps the most sampled drum beat of all time. If you don't already have this in your collection, there's a problem with your priorities. Here it is, though, as heard in hundreds of rap songs and more recently chopped- and sped-up in dozens of jungle jams.
"Funky Worm"(125k) by The Ohio Players: This is one of those "gotta' have it" beats that you hear everywhere constantly and never get sick of. If this beat were any funkier and phatter, they'd have to re-name it Dom DeLouise. Hardcore bass, hi-hat, and snare, all you could ever ask for in a drum loop. Another beat you gotta' get on wax or CD. If not, go to your room and sit in the corner until you decide to buy it!
"Get Out My Life Woman"(57k) by Lee Dorsey: As heard in "Just a Friend" by the Biz. That guy's a freak, but damn he's got some tight samples.
"Get Out My Life Woman"(55k) by Solomon Burke: Here's another (less phat) version of this classic intro drumbreak. It's not as amazing as the Lee Dorsey one (above), but it'll add a nice flavor to anything you wanna' add it to. Was there ever an un-funky version of this song recorded?
"Give It To You"(54k) by UPP: Here's a good one for you. Used by Eric B. and his special friend. Maybe if you use it, Eric B. will let you be his special friend, too... scary thought.
"Give It Up"(52k) by Kool & The Gang: Here's another phat loop from Funky George. This one laid the groundwork for Eric B. & Rakim's "Don't Sweat The Technique", and it does a great job at that. A really interesting beat, very unique and hard, and from a great song that donated almost all the samples for "Don't Sweat The Technique". I guess Eric B. & Rakim thought it would be easier to match up a whole bunch of samples from the same song instead of being more creative...I shouldn't talk, though, that track was phat. :)
"Got a Gig On My Back"(199k) by Kelly and the Soul Explosion: This is one of those great party drum tracks with tons of people in the background doin' they thang and shit. I don't know how you'd really use this one practically, but some things defy practicality-things like party drum tracks. So just loop tha' shit and be chillin', it's free anyway.
"Humpty Dump"(93k) by The Vibrettes: This one's all over the scene, one of the loosest, most wicked loops around. The bass drum kinda booms all over the place and the tight hi-hat somehow keeps it all together. This one was reissued on a Ubiquity comp, "Deja Vu", GO BUY IT!!
"Hunk o' Funk"(115k) by Brother Jack McDuff: According to the RAP SAMPLE FAQ, this one's been used by Casual. Personally, I'd rather listen to it by itself than with Casual proclaiming his greatness over it, but that's just me. This one's very unique, and extremely funky. Check it out for a nice change of pace.
"Impeach the President"(61k) by The Honeydrippers: You've heard it all over the place. Now you can loop it in your ear for hours. Well, maybe just one hour at a time.
"It's A New Day"(55k) by The Skull Snaps: The classic break. Oversampled? Maybe, but this drumbreak won't ever be played-out.
"Some Jingle-Bells-Sounding Isht"(28k) by Santa Claus: Merry Christmas, here's that funkin' Jingle Bells loop you hear every once in awhile. I don't know where this particular one is from, I kinda' lifted it from this lame DJ-ing album that neglected to list its sample sources (don't you hate that?). Don't tell on me for lifting it, though, and then maybe Santa won't bring you coals this December. Ho ho ho, ho.
"Kissing My Love"(112k) by Bill Withers: This one is all over the place, too. Funky & chillin', just like a Orange Julius...?
"Let The Music Take Your Mind"(184k) by Kool & The Gang: Yeah, yeah, another beat from K&TG. Don't get an attitude about it, all their beats are phat, and there's still a couple more to come (below). Here's a mid-song solo from George, in his usual wicked-frantic-funky style. Gotta' love the guy. Check this.
"Lunar Invasion"(69k) by The Silhouettes: This one's very laid back. I mean, it's not that great, but it could be if you fixed it up or mixed it with some 808 or something. This is off of the "Conversations With The Silhouettes" album that the guys at Dusty Groove seem to be very hot on, but honestly, the album was pretty gay, and this was by far the best thing on it. See what you think. (P.S. Wanna' buy my copy of this album? Trade?)
"Memphis BK"(54k) by Little Sonny: Another one reissued by Ubiquity (Jazz Dance Classics v.4 - THANK YOU UBIQUITY!). This is one of the best drum loops ever laid down on tape. It's totally original, completely distinctive, and outrageously catchy. Hard as hell, relentless, and yet chill at the same time. This is by far one of the best beats of all time. I think it was used on a Bulldog Break, too, but whatever, it'll blow you away, and you'll be tapping it all over the place for weeks.
"Mixed Up Cup"(234k) by Clyde McPhatter: With a name like McPhatter, how could you possibly go wrong? You couldn't, I guess, and here's the proof. This one's been sampled by Tribe ("Lyrics to Go") and probably many more that I don't even know. It's incredibly funky, and very hardcore, and with a simple, funky-as-hell little fill at the end. One of those beats you can just loop in your ear for hours, unless you have a job, in which case, get the fu*k back to work and get off the internet!
"N.T."(208k) by Kool & The Gang: Here's one of the all-time phattest beats. It's been used all over the place, and with good cause. This one'll get you movin' if nothing else will. Funky George scores again on the skins, and K&TG scores again for a DOPE song, too. DOWNLOAD IT NOW!
"North Carolina"(59k) by Les McCann: Here's another Tribe sample, so you know tha' shit's kickin'. I tweaked it a bit so it'd loop well, but you won't hold that against me, right? I'm just helpin' you out here, so you don't have to do it!
"Party Time"(52k) by Roy Porter: Party Time...Indeed. This is waay chill, one of those "Kissing My Love" type grooves, completely laid back and funky as hell. A good one to chop up, too, and another one available as a reissue from Ubiquity. Those guys make the world go 'round.
"Pneumonia"(50k) by Kool & The Gang: This one's special. First of all, it's all cut up and phunkdafied (by me), and also, I removed most of the guitar that was playing over it, too, with Cool Edit. It sounds pretty bad in lo-res, but it's slammin' in hi. Drop me a line if you want a hi-res copy of this "M.C. Whyte Mark-Ass Bitch" exclusive. But if you make millions off it, you better buy me a Coke or something...
"Scorpio"(87k) by Dennis Coffey: You'll remember this one from "Bust A Move" by Young MC. Now he's Old MC, but this beat still kicks. This one's so pumped-up and pulsing, it's like the Frugal Gourmet at a Boy Scouts meeting...god DAMN, that's a scary image.
"Searchin For Soul"(60k) by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers: These guys do a lot of searching, and they're hardcore into existentialism. Whatever, though, here's a chugging groover for you, New Orleans soul-sounding isht that kicks from the beginning and punches 'til the end. I think this one'd be cool to lay down with another beat. Anyone think of any good combinations? Let me know, I'd like to hear!
"Sing a Simple Song"(102k) by Sly & the Family Stone: Used by the Pharcyde, used by bla bla & bla, and everyone else. Tight. I think I might've tweaked this one a bit, but it's pretty-much like the original. Sorry.
"Sister Sanctified"(218k) by Stanley Turrentine: Okay, so this one doesn't just have drums, but we're friends, right? So you can forgive me for that. I think you'll like this one anyway, it's got this drone bass note every measure and this New Jack City-sounding guitar thing in the beginning, not to mention the nice fill at the end. Funky all the way through, and the kind of groove that you could just freestyle straight over without adding more tracks.
"Sneakin' In The Back"(108k) by Tom Scott: This is a sooper-chill drumbeat from a sooper-chill song. Very groovy, baby, yeah!
"Soul"(97k) by S.O.U.L.: Used by D.J. Shadow for "Midnight in a Perfect World" A great beat, I don't know if I've heard it anywhere else, but you probably have. It's a DAMN nice one.
"Spin It Jig"(51k) by Smokey Brooks: This one is PHAT and crazy, with really nice double-open hi-hat/bass hits at the end (you'll see what I mean). This one's great for choppin' (no, not Chopin, with your classical-music-knowin' ass), so grab a cleaver and get to it! I suggest either Ginsu2000 or CoolEdit, though the latter is preferable for safety reasons.
"Squib Cakes"(184k) by Tower of Power: Another Dave Garibaldi white-boy-funk-festival. Like "Can't You See", this one's over-produced, but it's still a funky slice of Wonder Bread. And if I were to toast it and lay some jam on it, I'd have myself a tasty little snack. And do you mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down?
"Synthetic Substitution"(110k) by Melvin Bliss: This is one of the most-sampled drumbreaks in history. Check Pharcyde, Naughty By Nature, and all other krayzee shit I ain't never heard of. You GOTSTA DIG THA' SHIT, MAN!
"Take It Where You Found It"(105k) by Lorraine Jackson: Not too user-friendly as it is, but this one's got that x-tra phat potential that we CoolEdit users can appreciate. Chop it up and serve it hot - and everything goin' be kickin' like mom's chicken! (Thanks, Hi-C)
"Take This Woman Off the Corner"(59k) by James Spencer: This one's a nice one. Nothing crazy, besides the title, just a dope beat that makes you say, "Damn, that's a dope beat", and with some nice sounding drums. I think if Nice-ness were people, this beat would be China. Oh yeah, I chopped it up a bit 'cause the bass line comes in toward the end of the beat, so here's the exclusive "M.C. Whyte Mark-Ass Bitch Internet-Only Remix" without the bass.
"Theme From 'The Planets'"(99k) by Dexter Wansel: What is 'The Planets' and who is Dexter Wansel? I think this one is used a lot in hip-hop, though it is frequently uncredited. It is a good one to mix with others, because it's slightly on the gay side as far as the physical sound of the drums, even though the beat itself is tighter than Pee Wee Herman's drawers at a porno flick.
"Things Got To Get Better"(83k) by Marva Whitney: Another remixed Marva Whitney tune from the "James Brown's Original Funky Divas" CD (also, see "Unwind Yourself" below), this one has traces of the original horns and bass (presumably due to track bleed-through) in the background, but the drums are so hard, you just can't complain. Check the tight-ass snare and the frantic speed with which Mr. Funky Drummer, Clyde Stubblefield, lays down tha' bomb here for us.
"The Tramp Part 1"(50k) by The Showmen, Inc: Perhaps the hardest one of the lot, this one might be pretty tricky to mix with a groove. But you got to rekanyze the hardcoreness of it. If you can mix this beat into a track, let me know, you deserve major props. Don't write it off, though, it's a very nice beat, even though it's crazier than Crispin Glover on PCP.
"Unwind Yourself"(83k) by Marva Whitney: This is the remixed version from the "James Brown's Original Funky Divas" CD. If you listen, you can still hear the funky baritone sax line in the background, but we've all heard that before, haven't we? These drums are real nice (Funky Clyde Always delivers), and I'm glad they gave the drums a chance to speak here, 'cause they sho' nuff gots a funky message to spread. Check this beat, now available for the first time ever.
"Uphill Peace of Mind"(55k) by Kid Dynamite: Used by Ani DiFranco on the album, "The Past Didn't Go Anywhere" (a great album with some killer insights by Utah Phillips), this one's very distinctive and very interesting. The drums have a very open sound, and they'd be great layered with something a little more cohesive. What the fuck am I talking about? Who knows...it's 2:30am and this is the last beat I'm gonna' write about tonight! Leave me alone! :(
"We're So Happy"(74k) by Medeski, Martin & Wood: I don't care if you hate Medeski, Martin & Wood. Those boys can fu**in' groove! If you don't know them, they're a current group, into experimental funky jazz fusion type isht, and this drummer (Billy Martin) is phatter than Oprah Winfrey in a Dunkin' Donuts. Check this one out...
"We've Gotta' Find A Way"(105k) by Freda Payne: Here's a chillin' drum loop with some bongo action up in the background. It'd work well as a base upon which to build a funky structure of some sort. On its own, though, it's just kinda like the Jerry Springer Show without sex or physical violence: nothin' to write home about.
"When the Levee Breaks"(146k) by Led Zeppelin: This is a great beat courtesy of some white guys. It has since been used by other white guys (The Beastie Boys), some mysterious Irish white people (Enigma), and a white girl (Sophie B. Hawkins), and of course it has also been heavily used by non-whities, too. Whatever your hue, it's a dope beat.
"You Can Make It If You Try"(50k) by Sly & the Family Stone: A very aggressive beat. This one's hard, fast, and in your face. If you can mix this one with something and make it sound phat, you 'da man.
All the sounds are in Windows format...and they're all free to download. If you want any of them in higher-resolution, you should e-mail me and I'll see what I can do for you. But I really want to encourage you to buy the albums with the beats on them, you'll thank me later...after you cuss me out. Oh, and please sign my guestbook or email me if you visit this site. I know it seems retarded, but just let me know that you checked it out and let me know what you'd like to see here in the future. And if you have any more information about any of the drum loops or groups mentioned here, let me know! I'm always interested in learning more about the roots of this music.
These pages are always under construction, so check back soon to see what else I come up with, or just to laugh at and ridicule me for not doing anything because I suck.
Please note that all sound files are the property of their respective owners (and not me). Please don't try to sell them, molest them, or use them to get dates. Just listen to them and enjoy them in a nice, legal, non-copyright-infringemental manner :)
