Dean Cain brings charm and poignancy to his role of newspaper reporter Clark Kent, who must invoke the persona of Superman in order to use his astonishing powers, while protecting his true identity.
Cain, a native of Malibu, California, was named top athlete at Santa Monica High School and then at Princeton University, where he earned first-team All-American football accolades and set two NCAA records. He was also the captain of Princeton's volleyball team. He graduated from Princeton with a BA in history, then joined the Buffalo Bills as a free safety. A knee injury quickly sidelined him, and he was forced to retire the same year.
Cain had sharpened his writing skills at Princeton, and soon found he had both a gift for and a fascination with screenwriting. Coached by his father, director Christopher Cain ("Young Guns," "The Next Karate Kid"), Cain wrote screenplays for many companies, including an untitled project for Hollywood Pictures. In the meantime, Cain starting doing commercials and filmed 35 of them in four years. That led to guest starring roles on numerous television series, including "Beverly Hills, 90210," "Life Goes On," "A Different World" and "Grapevine."
An accomplished writer as well as an actor, Dean is actively pursuing both careers. In addition to working on a number of feature-film scripts, Cain wrote, directed and produced the ABC special, "Off Camera With Dean Cain," and has written two episodes of "Lois & Clark."
Cain will make his feature film debut starring alongside Drew Barrymore in the Motion Picture Corp. of America drama, "Independence," which he filmed during his last hiatus. He has also appeared in the feature film, "The Stone Boy," directed by his father.
In what little spare time he has, Cain plays sports and promotes the value of education. He was once invited by House Speaker Tom Foley and Minority Leader Bob Michel to be the featured guest speaker on behalf of the prestigious Congressional Arts Caucus in Washington, D.C. Cain addressed hundreds of students and members of Congress on the importance of art and education. While in Washington, Cain also met with President Clinton in the Oval Office.
Cain lives near Los Angeles with his three dogs, whose identity he declines to reveal out of respect for their privacy.
