Red Sonja: She-Devil of the Hyrkanian Steppes Red Sonja was the child of a partially disabled veteran turned farmer. She desired to learn the ways of swordplay, and was jealous of her brother who had the opportunity to learn. When she was but sixteen, a band of armed men came to the family farm demanding her father rejoin the King's army. He refused, and Sonja's family was slaughtered, she suffered the worse fate of being raped and left alive. Swearing vengeance, she was met by an unknown goddess who granted her strength and skill at arms. She began searching for her abusors and swore that no man would have her who could not defeat her in fair combat.

Conan of Cimmeria A thief. A reaver. A slayer of men. That is the traditional description. Conan is, however, a complex character who has failings, such as superstition, and great strengths, such as honor. Conan is a foil to Red Sonja, as the only man who comes close to matching her. She does not appear to be able to beat him either. It is hinted that neither wishes to win, but neither is willing to lose, so they stay at arms length..
