A Mother's Good Night

By: Faith

Look at you, my precious one.

How beautiful yet helpless you seem.

But you must know that I love you

Even more than my grandest dream.

Could it have been so long ago

So many days gone by?

That the two of us were one and the same,

Inseparatable were you and I.

Many months have passed now

And here we sit, making those memories old.

I stare in disbelief towards you

That at last I have a babe to hold.

Your tiny hands search for my own

Entreating your mother's touch.

What choice does my heart and I have

But to give what we want to so much?

Those sleepy blue eyes that match your yawn

Are only too sweet to see.

I pray that someday they show you

How much you mean to me.

At last Sleep has coveted you.

You once again have met.

But I must admit that I am not ready

To give you up just yet.

We have risen from our chair now,

Unwillingly on my part.

I want to watch you longer, love

For you are so dear to my heart.

Reluctantly I place you down,

Among your blankets of love

Wrapped up like the gift you are

Sent from God above.

I hear some footsteps approaching,

Those of the man I adore.

But not even your father has power enough

To turn my eyes towards the door.

His lips have brushed my cheek

Then his face rests near my bow.

I feel his arms envelop the place

Where you rested not too long ago.

His eyes have followed my gaze by now,

Those eyes that adore you so.

"The time has come for sleep," he says

And hesitantly I turn to go.

You mean so much to us, my sweet

If only you could see.

But somehow I think you can

Behold the pride we have in thee.

And now Sleep has claimed me too

But not before I say

A thank you to those people I know,

Whom have helped me see this day

My thoughts and prayers turn skyward first

To give my gratitude to He,

Whom was generous enough to bestow his angel

To a simple woman like me.

With that being complete and finished,

With that now being done,

I turn at last to the man I love,

Who without, your existence would have been none.

I look upon him, this man I love

Staring at the handsome features of his.

A kiss and a word of thanks shall suffice

For he has done his share as it is.

But even as I close my eyes

And sleep in your father's embrace,

My thoughts refuse to tear away

From the sight of your sweet face.

We shall love you forever my dearest one.

We shall love you 'til the end of time.

For you, our beautiful girl, have a special place

That is in his heart and mine.
