AFA Analysis

Evil wears many masks in this world, but none so dangerous as the mask of righteousness. The American Family Association (AFA) is a group of Christian Fundamentalists who have come together in a common belief that the world we live in has been corrupted by immorality. They have decided to fight back against this corruption by trying to re-instate the "proper" religious morals given to us by the Bible. These moral views are narrow minded in the extreme and are often full of hate and prejudice. They often voice their beliefs that abortion is wrong, that homosexuality is a sin, that separation of church and state is a violation of their rights, that the media isn't biased enough in favour of Christianity and much more. The more I read articles from their website (http://www.afa.net) the more angry and horrified I become. So why do I keep going to their site? It's like a train wreck. I don't want to see, but I can't turn away. I was thinking of ranting about them in my Rant and Roar section, but there is just far too much that I have to say. That's why I have created this section. Every so often, I will chose an article from their website and analyze it. I don't know if they store their articles on their website or if they remove them after time, so you might encounter some broken links.

Article:
How to Raise Your Son to Be a Porn Addict
By: Steve Gallagher
Written: October 29, 2001

My response:

Finally! An article I support! I've been wondering how to raise my non-existent son to be a porn addict for years. I'm glad there's now an easy step-by-step guide. What about my daughter? Can I use this guide for her too, or should I wait for the daughter's guide to come out?

For those of you who wish your sons to become addicted to pornography, here are
a few simple principles you can incorporate in your lives to ensure success!

1. Cross your son’s will as seldom as possible. In fact, give him everything he
wants. The more you do, the more he will become accustomed to having everything
his way in life.

You know, I'm not so sure this is a good idea. After all, if he's accustomed to getting everything he wants, he'll want to actually be having sex, not just watching other people have sex. He'd probably be less likely to watch porn if that's the case. It'd probably be better if we found a way to stop him from interacting with members of the opposite sex except through pornography.

Take Adonijah for instance, who attempted to steal the kingdom from his younger
brother Solomon. We are told in I Kings, “his father had never crossed him at any
time…” Thus, by spoiling him rotten, David perfectly prepared him to aggressively
go after what he wanted-even if it meant killing his own brother.

Perhaps Solomon had him in mind when he wrote, “The rod and reproof give
wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.” (Proverbs
29:15) Raising a child without correction will establish the lawless attitude
necessary for him to become addicted to lasciviousness.

Doesn't this mean he'll be more likely to go to a prostitute than he will to watch pornography? I mean, watching porn is hardly "aggressively going after what you want"..... unless you prefer masturbation to sex.

2. Show him, by your own example, that pleasure is the most important thing in
life. You don’t have to be involved with pornography; indulging yourself in any
pleasure will do. The important thing is that you exemplify hedonism in any way
you can. Help him to see that he owes it to himself to indulge the desires of the
flesh. After all, if he doesn’t reward himself, who will? He certainly doesn’t have time
to wait for God to get around to it!

I like this paragraph because Gallagher has to concede that Christianity is also based on hedonism. Hedonism is the belief that pleasure is the only good in life. In Christianity, people avoid doing morally bad things so that they can go to heaven, which is pleasure for all eternity. Now, Gallagher knows this, which is why he adds the last sentence: "He certainly doesn’t have time to wait for God to get around to it!" So, clearly the problem isn't hedonism, but lack of patience!

3. Another valuable lesson you can teach him through your own life is to immerse
himself in the mentality of this fallen world by watching television, reading secular
magazines and spending a lot of time surfing the Internet. If he is ever going to
become any kind of real addict, he must learn early on that he needs a daily
saturation in the mindset of the unsaved. The more of this thinking you can subject
him to, the better.

I disagree. I don't think he must learn early on that he needs a daily saturation in the mindset of the unsaved. He could learn that later in life and not miss a step.

4. Teach your son that church attendance is something done out of obligation, not
because one receives anything of value there. Going to Sunday services is a lot like
paying taxes: you don’t want to do it but if you fail to, you may regret it later. Some
call it “fire insurance.”

Hehehehee...."fire insurance" :) That's a good one!

Be sure he understands how to act as though he is sincerely interested in what
goes on at church. Rehearse pious-sounding phrases in front of him so he knows
how to fit in with the rest of the people there. Sit in the back pew so you can be the
first out the door when the service is over (remember, you have a football game to
catch!) He also needs to understand that being entertained is far more important
than spiritual matters. Whatever you do, never-NEVER-spend time in family
devotions. He may get some crazy ideas were he ever to see that!

Wow, these are actually really good tips! I'm gonna write this shit down! The 'rehearse pious-sounding phrases' one is brilliant!

5. Lastly, don’t install the AFA Online Filter on your computer. That blasted filter
will ruin any opportunity he might have of coming across pornography on the
Internet. It will not only close off every raunchy web site he might look up out of
curiosity, but it will also stop him from inadvertently entering a porn site that has
been disguised as something innocent.

I can't believe how blatant a plug this is! Pushing their software like this has to be one of the sleaziest things I've seen them do. Why don't they go all the way and say "Buy our product or you'll burn forever in hell"?

I have written this article in jest, of course.

WHAT???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nevertheless, it should be understood
that anybody who practices the principles I have mentioned here might very well be
raising his son to become addicted to pornography. As someone who has
ministered to hundreds of porn addicts over the years, I can testify that the majority
of them were taught these very principles by their parents-many of whom claimed to
be Christians!

You mean people have specifically taught their children not to use the AFA Online Filter? Man, that's kind of a specific principle to teach, don't you think?
