Here is my Rant and Roar page. My rants vary in length depending on how I feel and how much I have to say about each issue. Once again, I'd like to point out that I am not trying to offend anyone in particular. This is just me blowing off some steam.
Terrorists can be found all over the world. They have political agendas and beliefs which they feel can only be conveyed through violence and terror. Whether it be murder or kidnapping, the terrorists do what they do because they feel threatened. What is it that these terrorists are threatened by? Well, if they're from Quebec, it's the alphabet. Before you read any further, I hope you understand the language situation here in Quebec. If not, then please read my Language Police rant. It gives a basic rundown of the insane language laws we have in Quebec.
So, now that you know what the situation is like here, lets go over some of the recent events that have gone on here in Montreal. Over the past few weeks, a terrorist group calling themselves the French Language Self-Defense Brigade has been going around fire-bombing buildings and companies which use English only signs. Maybe it's just me, but this seems rather pathetic! There are so many things which are worth fighting for in this world. I may not agree with the concept of terrorism, but if you're intend on using it, then at least protest something worth protesting! How about the Quebec government? The one that blatantly lies to it's public, and which uses tax payer's money simply for the purpose of bad-mouthing Canada? I mean, at least PRETEND to be pissed off about something more important! The terrorists here in Montreal are outraged by the size of letters on signs. Common' guys, do you realize you're pissed off at THE SIZE OF LETTERS!? We're not even talking about what the letters and words MEAN, we're just talking about their size here! This is getting crazy!
Until just recently, I have not really been concerned about this small band of terrorists. Last Wednesday however, they fire-bombed a church because it was going to be the meeting place for an Alliance Quebec gathering. That's going way too far. Alliance Quebec is a group that is fighting to gain equal rights for the English speaking people in this province. The FLSDB doesn't seem to like this concept of equal rights. They have called Alliance Quebec's views "bigoted" and "racist against the French language". Well, maybe if they spent more time listening to Alliance Quebec and less time trying to BOMB them, they might see that equal rights is not a threat to the French language! And even if it was, fire-bombing churches certainly isn't going to help the situation. All it's going to do is make the FLSDB look like the insane, evil French bigots that they are.
Fortunately, no one has yet been hurt in these bombings. Someone was usually around to get help and to put out the fire before it did any real damage. This insanity of this has to stop now before someone does get hurt. You don't promote a language by bombing people who use another one! It's remarkable how stupid an idea that is. I'm not even sure what the FLSDB is trying to achieve with these bombings. Say they succeed and all the signs in Quebec become French only. What benefit would that have? How would life in Quebec improve? All it would do is force more businesses to leave for fear of being bombed, and discourage tourists who can't speak French!
I've also heard that the FLSDB is trying to force stores with English names, like the Second Cup, to change them into French. Again, this is just stupidity. What possible benefit could this bring? What does the Brigade find so frightening about the words "Second" and "Cup"? The words aren't going to come alive and start attacking people! If stores WERE forced to change their names, then Quebec would have an even HARDER time trying to get businesses to come to Quebec than they already do. The FLSDB has to realize that no one is sitting around trying to figure out ways of destroying the French language and all who love it. Here in Quebec, the English speaking citizens just want to be treated equally! It makes me wonder why no one has tried to form an English Language Self-Defense Brigade. It makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than a French one.
