Mum sees Andy Gibb died - Cocaine horror

Tragic pop star Andy Gibb died in hospital yesterday following a massive drug overdose.

His mother was at his bedside as the baby brother of the Bee Gees super-group finally lost his ten-year battle against cocaine addiction.

Andy, 30-year old former boyfriend of Dallas beauty Victoria Principal had been rushed into hospital on Monday after suffering convulsions following the overdose.

On Wednesday, he was sitting up in bid, laughing and joking.

But at 8am yesterday, he died despite desperate attempts to revive him.

Andy is thought to have had a massive heart attack.

Megastar brother Robin was with mum Barbara at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Shattered Mrs Gibb later collapsed and was under sedation last night.

Andy was divorced by his wife Kim in 1978. He want on to have flings with Marie Osmond and Susan George, before the romance with Victoria Principal.

But Andy blew a fortune on cocaine and six months ago in Miami he was made bankrupt, owing more than £1m.

Andy, who had a string of solo hits in the 70s, came to Britain six weeks ago to begin work on a comeback album.

Friends claimed he had at last kicked the cocaine habit.

Mum Barbara was looking after him at a cottage in Thame, Oxfordshire, owned by brother Robin.

Robin, who has been in London on business, dashed to Oxfordshire after Andy was admitted to hospital.

Yesterday, he telephoned brothers Maurice and Barry at their homes in Miami to break the tragic news.

Last night they were locked inside their multi-million pound homes on "Bee Gees Island" their exclusive Florida playground. A close friend said:

"The whole family are absolutely devastated. Maurice and Barry are in tears at their homes.

They are being comforted by their wives. This is a very close family, and it has shattered them all.

Andy had been in great health, both in America and during the weeks he spent in England.

But suddenly on Monday, he collapsed with crippling stomach pains.

Although he didn't undergo surgery, doctors treated him successfully and by Wednesday he was feeling much better.

In fact, Robin had been to see him on several occasions, and he was sitting up in bed laughing and joking. But yesterday morning, he suddenly took a turn for the worse.

A local GP saw Andy on Monday before he was taken to hospital. It wasn't the first time he had been rushed in for treatment.

Several months earlier, the same doctor had told him to undergo treatment in exactly the same circumstances.

Last night, Thames Valley policy said the Oxford coroner had been informed and a post-mortem examination would be held.
