Drugs Caught Up With Andy

Pop star Andy Gibb died of heart failure caused by years of drug abuse,it was confirmed yesterday.

The coroner in Oxford - where the Bee Gees' younger brother died in hospital on Thursday - ordered the cause of death to be kept secret. But a hospital spokesman said it was inflammation of the heart.

No inquest will be held because his death was ruled to be by natural causes.

Andy was warned three years ago that his cocaine addiction had permanently damaged his heart and unless he kicked the habit it would kill him.

His father, Hughie, 72, flew from Miami yesterday to take charge of funeral arrangements.

He was met at Heathrow by Robin Gibb, who angrily denied that drugs had killed his brother.

Meanwhile, the Gibb family issued a statement speaking of their deep shock at Andy's "untimely death".

They said: "His passing was completely unexpected and occurred just as he was looking forward to resuming his career and working on a new recording contract."

Robin Gibb's personal assistant, Ken Graydon, said the family was "devastated by grief."
