Eric Roberts Filmography 1979 to 1999 with notes
This page is for movies and TV shows that Eric made before the year 2000. There is another web page for movies after 2000. I am doing his latest films first and I will try to go back and cover some of his early films when I have time.
- Spawn 3: Ultimate Battle (1999) ... Petey
- Have this on DVD but haven't figured it out yet. Guess I should have watched #1 and #2 first. Available on DVD.
- Wildflowers (1999) ... Jacob
- Cally (Clea DuVall) is searching for her mother who abandoned her on a commune in the 60s. She latches on to Sabine (Daryl Hannah) as the woman who might be her mother. Cally decides to recreate her mother's experience of the 1960's by hopping in bed with her mother's old drug dealer, Jacob (Eric). Eric has a small but slimey role. Available on video. Location page.
- Extreme Duress (1999).... Robert Woodfield
- This must have been the working title. I got it at Blockbuster and it was called Restraining Order. Eric has a starring role in this one. Getting guilty clients off scott free is all in a day's work for attorney Robert Walters (Eric) but everything changes when he actually witnesses a murder committed by one of his clients.
- Lansky (1999 TV) .... Ben Siegel (age 40)
- Lansky (Richard Dreyfuss) went from rags to riches with a combination of good business sense, absolute ruthlessness and a few good friends, Bugsy (Eric) and Lucky (Anthony LaPaglia). Available on video.
- Purgatory (1999 TV)
- Blackjack Britton (Eric) and his outlaw gang ride into the mysterious town of Purgatory where the good citizens are not exactly what they seem. Official web page.
- Better Way to Die, A (1999)
- Haven't seen this yet but people who have seen it tell me that Eric isn't in it. According to the announcement at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998, he was cast in the starring role but, apparently, that changed.
- Heaven's Fire (1999 TV)
- Dean McConnell (Eric), his son and his ex-wife are in a tour group trapped by the bad guys in a high-rise building that is on fire. I saw this on TV it's available on video and Eric stars as the good guy.
- Hitman's Run (1999) Hitman Tony Lazorka (Eric) doesn't kill when the mob tells him to and ends up in the witness protection program. His new wife and child do not know that he was a hitman until they are kidnapped by the mob. Lots of action and Eric gets to play both a bad guy and a good guy! Available on video.
- King's Guard, The (1999)
- Soundtrack CD was released Aug. 2000. Movie released 28 Aug 2001. Official web site. I heard from several people and they had a lot of fun filming this costume epic. They used members of the Society for Creative Ananchronism so there were authentic costumes and members of the Action Actor's Society for the fencing scenes but the script had serious ups and downs and the production was somewhat amateurish. Eric had to share the role of bad guy and there wasn't enough script to go around.
- Replacement, The (1999)
- A publicity stunt goes bad and only The Alternate (Eric) stands between the president of the United States and death at the hands of a band of terrorists. I've seen this movie on TV and the title was Agent of Death. The Canadian video is The Alternate and I'm assuming that the Keanu Reeves movie The Replacements that was in production at the same time, was what made them change the title. Stunt coordinator Steven Lambert and fight choreography by Bryan Genesse. Ouch! Smirks by Michael Madsen as the fit-to-be-tied FBI agent on the case. The producer has a web page
- TripFall (1999)
- Rachel Hunter is a vacationing housewife who is
kidnapped with her two young children and held for ransom by a trio of total
psychos, led by Mr. Eddie (Eric). Her wimpy husband (John Ritter) must put on his hero suit and go to the rescue. Eric has weird little braids in his hair again (See Bittersweet and Heaven's Prisoners) and does a high-pitched southern accent thing. After she is kidnapped, Rachel gets to ride around in a van with duct tape over her mouth for the whole rest of the movie. Poor Rachel.
- Bittersweet (1998)
- After Samantha (Angie Everhart) is horribly betrayed by her friends, she can think of nothing but revenge. Her hit list includes everyone, from the bottom to Mr. Venti (Eric) at the top. It really bothered me when Samanha buys a really expensive pair of shoes, wears them for about 10 minutes and then tosses them away. She could have gone to PayLess! Eric has a fairly small role.
- Dead End (1998)
- When Henry Smovinsky's (Eric) ex-wife is murdered he sets out to find the killer but the police think he's wasting his time -- they've already decided that he's their best suspect. Run, Eric, Run! Available on video.
- Facade (1998)
- The title was Death Valley on TV and Facade at the video store. Colin Wentworth (Eric) wants to build a hotel. There's a bunch of crazy people and Brad Garrett took a week off from Everybody Loves Raymond to play a bumbling hitman.
- La Cucaracha (1998) ... Walter Poole
- Cubicle slave Walter Poole (Eric) goes to Mexico to change his life but it changes in ways he never expected, none of them good. Available on video and DVD with great extras. Eric totally stars in this film and has the best soliloquy since Hamlet. Must see to appreciate.
- Making Sandwiches (1998 short) Eric plays Julia. James Ryder did the makeup.
- Haven't seen this one. Not available on video.
- Past Perfect (1998) Eric plays Dylan Cooper in this time-travel scifi film. Available on video.
- Prophecy II, The (1998)
- The Angel Gabriel (Christopher Walken)has returned from hell to kill the woman (Jennifer Beals) who will give birth to the baby who will save the world. The angel Danyael (Russel Wong) must save Valarie to save the world. Eric plays the battle-weary archangel Michael for about 3 minutes of screen time. Still worth watching. Available on video.
- Two Shades of Blue (1998)
- Eric plays, Calvin Stasi, boyfriend of the D.A. Rachel Hunter is on the run from a murderer and gets a job as a phone operator at a telephone company for the deaf. She is caught between a murderer and the D.A. (Matlin) who is trying to catch him. This is the only movie I've seen with TDD sex! Available on video.
- Spawn (1997) ... Petey
- Cartoon available on DVD.
- Most Wanted (1997)
- Eric plays Assistant Deputy Director Spencer. Available on video.
- "C-16: FBI" (1997 TV Series)
- Eric plays FBI agent John Olansky. This was a nice role for Eric on a great show with a wonderful cast. The network never even gave it a chance. There is an Emmy nomination video floating around but the show is not for sale on video. Fan site
- "Odyssey, The" (1997 TV mini-series)
- Eurymachus (Eric) hardly waited for Odysseus's boat to get out of sight before trying to date his wife. How could she resist Eric in a toga? Available on video. Like the book, Eric has only a small role.
- Shadow Men, The (1997)
- Bob Wilson (Eric) and his wife take a little drive in the mini-van and are kidnapped by alians. And that was only the beginning of their problems. Eric stars. Available on video.
- T.N.T.
- Eric plays Russo. Available on video.
- In Cold Blood (1996 TV)
- A remake different and more complex than the original with Eric as murderer Perry Smith. Available on video.
- American Strays (1996) .... Martin
- Dark Angel (1996 TV)
- Eric plays detective D’Archangelo who is tracking down a killer of women in New Orleans. Beautiful setting and good music. My favorite scene is the oyster eating contest. Not that I have a fascination with food or anything, but did Eric really eat any of those oysters? Or was he just acting? (See the cockroach scene in La Cucaracha) Definately worth watching.
- Cable Guy, The (1996)
- Several people who have seen this movie couldn't find Eric. He appears for less then a minute on a tv screen. Is it shorter than his appearance on a tv screen in Cecil B. Demented? Someday I'll invest in a stop watch and see if it's shorter than the time he appears in Option or The Grave.
- Power 98 (1996).... Karlin
- Some radio stations are all music, some are all talk, this one is all murder. The young DJ in this is played by Jason Gedrick who later starred in Falcone. Eric is very naughty.
- Doctor Who (1996 TV)
- Eric plays Bruce and then gets to play The Master in Bruce's stolen body. There's a good scene where Bruce (Bruce's body inhabited by The Master) gets out of bed and his wife (played by Eliza Roberts) is told to call him "The Master." She is willing to go along with that (nudge nudge wink wink) but he gets a little rougher than she expected. There's a fabulous scene in the hospital when bits of the dead and rotting Bruce sloth off! Yyyeeewww!
- Heaven's Prisoners (1996)
- Dave Robicheaux (Alec Baldwin) thinks that his old friend Bubba Rocque (Eric) may be responsible for the death of his wife or knows who is. Now I think of Bubba every time somebody hands me a drink. "Put a coaster under that for me, will ya Dave?" All the ads for this movie say "Terri Hatcher NUDE!!!" But it's for about a split second and she's not that great anyway. Better off watching Rachel Hunter in Two Shades of Blue if you want to see skin. I really liked Mary Stuart Masterson in this although her role is kind of strange for her and I think fewer of Vondie Curtis Hall's scenes should have been cut. The reason that I'm so critical about this movie is that I loved the book so much. I had it all screenplayed and cast in my head when I was reading the book. In my head Eric played Dave Robicheaux. Alec Baldwin wasn't there -- he was home in Massapequa. Bubba Rocque was a little out of focus but I think maybe I was seeing Tommy Lee Jones.
- Glass Cage, The (1996)
- Set in New Orleans. Paul Yaeger (Richard Tyson), ex-CIA, tends bar at the nightclub where his former lover, Jacqueline (Charlotte Lewis), strips in a glass cage. She and her boss, Marko, are into smuggling and drugs and other naughty stuff under the protection of currupt cop, Detective Montrachet.
- Grave, The (1996)
- Eric was quoted in an interview saying that he had a nice little role (as Cass) in this film. Emphasis on LITTLE. He is indeed good in the role but it's way way too short. Films outside the loop.
- It's My Party (1996).... Nick Stark
- No matter how many times I watch this movie, when it gets to the scene where Eric is moving and packs all his stuff in a box, I start crying and I've only seen the whole rest of the movie blurry. When my husband comes home from work and smells pastitsio in the oven he says "Oh, no! You've been watching that movie again!" Movieweb
- Public Enemies (1996).... Arthur Dunlop
- Also called Public Enemy #1. Eric and Alyssa Milano are much more prominently displayed on the video box than in the movie. Alyssa is in the movie for about 5 minutes. People selling this video say "See Alyssa Milano NUDE!" Well, good luck. Eric comes in about 70 minutes into the movie and checks out less than 30 minutes later. He manages to get Ma Barker naked twice in that time. "See Ma Barker NUDE!" But I guess that wouldn't have sold many videos.
- Immortals, The (1995).... Jack
- A crime committed by people who have absolutely nothing to lose.
- Nature of the Beast (1995) .... Adrian (Dusty)
- Saved by the Light (1995 TV)
- A near-death experience changes Dannion Brinkley's (Eric) life. His wife doesn't understand what happened to him but thousands of other people, who had the experience themselves or are curious about life after death, flock to hear him speak. The real Dannion Brinkley has written a book and also made a documentary video about his experience.
- Specialist, The (1994) .... Tomas Leon
- Babyfever (1994) .... Anthony
- End of the Icon(1994)
- A short film made at AFI by award-winning writer-director Garrett Benett. Eric has a cameo. See it at I-Film.
- Freefall (1994)
- Katy (Pamela Gidley)is sent to the jungle to take photos for her fiance's magazine where she meets the mysterious Grant Orion (Eric). They get their clothes off and have some steamy jungle sex but later he does something kinky to her with drugs and she doesn't know if he has betrayed her or what.
- Hard Truth, The (1994) .... Chandler Etheridge
- Love Is a Gun (1994)
- Forensic photographer Jack Hart (Eric) has a really weird thing going with a gun and two women. Eliza co-stars.
- Sensation (1994) .... Dr. Ian Burton
- Love, Cheat & Steal (1993 TV)
- Eric was quoted in an interview saying that this was his worst film. I could argue that. Anyway, Reno Adams (Eric) gets out of jail and visits the old girlfriend who betrayed him. She has a husband (John Lithgow, in his weirdest role and, yes, I'm including Third Rock) who doesn't know about her shady past.
- Best of the Best II (1993)
- Alex Grady (Eric) returns to avenge a friend who never returned from a fight-to-the-death for entertainment in Los Vegas. Wayne Newton turns in an absolutely flawless performance in this movie.
- Voyage (1993 TV) Gil Freeland (Eric) is as good a reason as any to stay away from class reunions. I think this is also called something like Cruise of Fear.
- Love, Honor & Obey: The Last Mafia Marriage (1993 TV) Movie made From Rose Bonanno's book about her marriage to old style Mafia member Bill Bonanno (Eric). Have you noticed how often Eric plays Italians?
- Fugitive Among Us (1992 TV) .... Cal Harper
- Final Analysis (1992).... Jimmy Evans
- Vendetta: Secrets of a Mafia Bride (1991 TV) .... Sean McLeary
- Eric plays Sean McLeary, an Irish hit man who kills a Mafia boss in front of the guy's little girl. The little girl swears vengeance. Years later the little girl falls in love with none other than Sean McLeary. There are two versions of this. Vendetta was a 3-night mini-series that people have told me was really good. There is a video of about 100 minutes also sold with the title A Family Matter that is cut to ribbons. A short version, probably the same as the video, has appeared on TV with the title Bride of Violence.
- By the Sword (1991)
- Alexander Villard (Eric) runs a fencing salon. He doesn't know that the janitor (F. Murray Abraham) who sweeps the salon is also the fencer who killed his father. Real fencing students in the background and good camera work make it look real. Don't watch this movie with a fencer because they will keep pointing things out to you that you don't care about. The really important thing is how good Eric looks in the clothes.
- Lonely Hearts (1991).... Frank
- Available on video.
- Fire Princess (1990)
- Starred Eric with Jennifer Jason Leigh. I haven't seen the film but I have an advertisement for it with the name of the theater, day and time it was playing during a film festival.
- Descending Angel (1990 TV)
- Michael Rossi (Eric) is going home with his fiancee (played by Diane Lane) to meet her parents. It doesn't take long for him to realize that his future father-in-law is not who he says he is. Trivia: There is a painting of Archangel Michael prominently displayed in this movie and Eric gets to play him in Prophecy II eight years later.
- Lost Capone, The (1990 TV)
- Al Capone (Eric) can't stand it when his brother decides to go straight. Capone is known to have killed at least five people personally and to have ordered hundreds more during his criminal career.
- Ambulance, The (1990)
- Josh Baker (Eric) trys to pick up a beautiful girl (Janine Turner) on the street when she is taken ill. After an unmarked ambulance takes her away, she disappears and Josh won't give up until he finds her. James Earl Jones and Rip Torn are his unlikely helpers. In one interview, Eric said in an interview that this was his worst film but it's not. He had obviously forgotten making Rude Awakening.
- Best of the Best (1989)
- Who cast James Earl Jones as a taekwondo coach??? Alex Grady (Eric) is chosen for a U.S. taekwondo team but here are a lot of personal problems to overcome before the group can really be a team. I love Eric's causual backhand. He uses it again in Best of the Best 2.
- Rude Awakening (1989).... Fred
- Fred (Eric) and Jesus Monteya (Cheech Marin) escape to a South American commune in the 60's and find the world changed when they return 20 years later. You'd have to be as stoned as they were to enjoy this movie.
- Options (1988)
- The reviewer at DVELaser.com explains it better than I do. An entertaining and funny movie but this must be Eric's shortest appearance in a film. Eric appears for less than 30 seconds after the final credits. His whole entire role in the film is completely AFTER the final credits are totally finished! And the part swinging on the vine is probably a stunt double!
- To Heal a Nation (1988 TV) .... Jan Scruggs
- The story of the Viet Nam vet who was the moving force behind getting the Viet Nam Memorial built in Washington, D.C. Video is out of print but used copies are available in the online auctions.
- Blood Red (1988)
- Eric plays the cute and rebelleous Marco Collogero who cares nothing for his father's vineyards until his father is killed by a land-hungry railroad magnate. Julia's first feature film as Marco's sister.
- Portes tournantes, Les (1988).... Musician - Tchukon
- Eric Roberts, the white actor, is not in this movie. The person named Eric Roberts who is in this movie is a black (African American) jazz musician, a member of the group Tchukon.
- Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (1987 TV) (voice)
- This is a very moving documentary made up of actual letters written by soldiers in Vietnam. Eric reads three or four of the letters.
- Nobody's Fool (1986)
- Slow Burn (1986 TV) .... Jacob Asch
- Coca-Cola Kid (1985).... Becker
- Runaway Train (1985) .... Buck
- Pope of Greenwich Village (1984).... Paulie
- Miss Lonelyhearts (1983).... Adam White
- Not available on video.
- Star 80 (1983).... Paul Snider
- Raggedy Man (1981)
- Teddy (Eric) is a sailor who spends his leave with a lonely single mother.
- Paul's Case (1980 TV) .... Paul
- King of the Gypsies (1978) .... Dave
- Eric's first feature film. Photo.
- "Another World" (1977 TV Series) .... Ted Bancroft
- The Little Pioneers (1961?) Local TV in Atlanta, GA
