due South is an hour-long comedy-drama action series and set in the mean streets of Chicago. RCMP Constable Benton Fraser (Paul Gross) originally comes to Chicago to find the killers of his father, RCMP Sergeant Robert Fraser (Gordon Pinsent). During his search, he teams up with Chicago Detective First Grade Raymond Vecchio (David Marciano). At the beginning of Season Three, Ray goes deep undercover in Las Vegas to investigate the mob. To keep his cover in Chicago from being blown, Detective Stanley Raymond Kowalski (Callum Keith Rennie) assumes Vecchio's identity, both professionally and personally. Joining the action is Fraser's deaf, lip-reading half-wolf/half-dog Diefenbaker, named for former Canadian prime minister John G. Diefenbaker.
Due South was cooked up during a 1992 meeting between Alliance Communications chairman/CEO Robert Lantos and then CBS president Jeff Sagansky as a Crocodile Dundee-type comedy-adventure series about a Mountie from the Canadian North who works with the Chicago Police Department. The show first aired on CBS in September 1994 but was cancelled at the end of the season. Due South was revived in 1995, but it was again cancelled. Thanks to a loyal fan base, Lantos received financial support from CTV, BBC, and other foreign broadcasters for a third season. PolyGram Television syndicated the third season in America.
