rather short but sweet Cate News this week. Here are the bits and pieces:
A In a "Hannibal" news update, Gary Oldman will play victim/villian Mason Verger in Ridley Scott's 'Silence of the Lambs' sequel, alongside Julianne Moore and Anthony Hopkins. Also added to the cast are Giancarlo Giannini and Francesca Neri as Italian detectives.
It looks like post-production on "The Gift" should be able to proceed unimpeded now that the "Spider-Man" shoot has been moved back to December, and the search for a lead actor goes on. Rumours continue to abound as to who will play the lead in Sam Raimi's upcoming film. Possibilities include Wes Bentley, Heath Ledger, Chris Klein, Ewan McGregor, Tobey Maguire and yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Italian director Liliana Cavani ("The Night Porter") will direct a sequel to "The Talented Mr Ripley", "Ripley's Game", based on Patricia Highsmith's novel set 25 years after the first story. It's about a terminally ill man (rumoured to be Rupert Everett) who is hired by Ripley to commit murder.
Although Jude Law may be out of the picture regarding Shekhar's remake of "Four Feathers", it appears he has rebounded to join Frances O'Connor and Haley Joel Osment in Steven Spielberg's upcoming "A.I.".
PIECE DE RESISTANCE
As
s we mentioned several issues ago about Gillian Armstrong being in advanced talks to direct FilmFour's adaptation of Sebastian Faulks' best-selling novel, “Charlotte Gray”....here is part of what The Sun-Herald (Sydney newspaper May 1) has reported...
A Piece de Resistance
"Cate Blanchett has been signed to star in one of Britain's biggest budget movies, playing fictional wartime hero Charlotte Gray.
Blanchett will be directed by fellow Australian Gillian Armstrong in the $40 million production, which will begin shooting in Scotland, London and southern France early next year.
The film is based on the best selling novel "Charlotte Gray" by British author Sebastian Faulks, and tells the story of an innocent young Scottish girl who falls in love with a dashing pilot.
Blanchett's character is recruited into British Intelligence to help the French resistance and stays in France to look for her lover, lost when his plane crashed."
Another great project Cate has decided to work on and it's wonderful that she is back working with fellow Aussie Gillian Armstrong, who directed her in "Oscar and Lucinda" so brilliantly.
Finally, an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences press release is reporting that Cate will be joining a distinguished group of entertainment figures slated to attend the Premiere of Ridley Scott's newest epic, "Gladiator", starring Russell Crowe. Since Ridley was after Cate for the '"Hannibal" project, it makes sense that she would end up on the invitation list. Although, what Cate's frequent flyer account status must look like at this point is anybody's guess!
The Premiere is slated to take place Monday, May 1 at the Academy Theatre on Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. It seems rather remarkable to this reporter that this highly anticipated film is having its Premiere at this location, in that its seating capacity is not as large as other theatres in the area, but I can attest to the fact that the comfort level and technical aspects of the theatre are unsurpassed in LA, so perhaps that was the reasoning. This picture will give you an eye of the layout. There certainly is not a bad seat in the house. Let's hope Russell loses his scowl for the evening.
That's all for now, Blanchetteers! See you next time. Until then, "PLAY A VOLTA!
