Yes, these are
spoilers. Not very long ones, but hopefully enough if you've missed
an episode or are trying to track down a certain scene, you can probably
use this as your guide.
The Gift (101 : 9 October 1998)
This pilot episode introduces us to the Logan family, who run a horse farm in 1880's Kentucky. Ned Logan volunteers to take on a 12-year-old boy, who turns out to be a 17-year-old street smart petty thief named Jeremy Bradford, who ingratiates himself with the Logan women and stirs up trouble for the Logan men. Sean breaks his engagement with Vivian Winters because of his love for Marita, his father's African American secretary and family friend. His loan is then called upon by Vivian's father, Asa. The tobacco barn is mysteriously destroyed by fire as Jeremy tries to sneak away on the prize Andalusian stallion.
Tango (102 : 16 October 1998)
The local debutante ball is the subject of the Logan household, as Alice and Jeremy find themselves together after their escorts renege at the last moment. Sean and Clay confront William Winters about the arson, based upon Jeremy's recollection of the events surround the barn fire. Ned pays off Sean's loan and staves off a feud created by the Winters family.
Blood Relative (103 : 23 October 1998)
Ned's sister-in-law Regine appears on the Logan farm with the same agenda she had 10 years prior - to bring Alice back to Boston with her. Ned is forced to let Alice decide for herself, while the three boys travel to Louisville (not Louisiana - a typo in the TV GUIDE version) on business. Clay and Jeremy gamble away the money entrusted to them for the purchase of a yearling. Sean meets an authoress, who uses him as a character in her newest novel after having a one-night stand with him. Clay regains the money and purchases the horse before they return home. Alice decides to stay in Lexington for the moment.
Brother Love (104 : 30 October 1998)
After an assassination attempt leaves Asa Winters in the hospital and William on the run, Vivian turns to the Logan family for help and ends up pitting Sean against Clay for her affection. Ned is asked to develop a way for the Winters to pay back all of the money that they owe to their investors, who are about to go under financially. Clay feels some responsibility in not stopping the shooter before he was able to shoot Asa, and this misplaced guilt brings him right into Vivian's waiting arms.
Emma (105 : 6 November 1998)
Jeremy's mother Emma (Melissa Leo) has been released from the sanitarium in New York after being cured of her tuberculosis (consumption). Unfortunately, the cure was laudanum - a concoction of straight opium and alcohol which is highly addictive and has serious side effects. Jeremy discovers her addiction and tries to wean her off quietly. Meanwhile, Lexy has developed a very close attachment to Emma. Sean's crops begin to fail due to a curious mold that threatens to cost him the entire crop. Clay strike a deal with a con man, who foots him with a $80,000 bill and skips town. Emma takes Lexy with her and sets off to find more laudanum in a very unstable state of mind.
Search Party (106 : 13 November 1998)
Ned finds Lexy gone and he along with Isaac, Clay and Jeremy set out to find the two missing women. Sean stays behind to manage the farm and try to save his crops. Marita suggests an old folk remedy for the plants, which works after everything else has failed. While searching for Lexy, the search party finds the con man from Clay's bad deal and Ned almost kills him with his bare hands (a great scene). Lexy and Emma, who is getting worse, make their way to an abandoned plantation house after traveling down river. The search party is reunited with Lexy and Emma, who is taken back to the Logan house for treatment. The doctor reveals that the expedition caused the TB to come back and Emma has to go back to the hospital. Clay gives Jeremy the money he made from the horse deal so that Emma could be placed in a good hospital, not a charity one.
Kind Eye (107 : 20 November 1998)
When Jeremy is chosen by Ned to wear the Logan silks in the Jockey Club race instead of Clay, Clay makes the decision to ride for the Winters at Vivian's invitation. Both Ned's and Clay's stubborn streaks really show through in this battle of wills concerning the future of the Logan farm. Alice and Lexy begin to campaign for the admission of women into the Jockey Club but finds difficulty in getting support for their project.
The Big Fix (108 : 8 December 1998)
After a candidate for state assembly is injured, Sean volunteers to run in his place. He is waging another battle at the same time to get fair prices from the Winters for the tobacco farmers. But his relationship with Marita is revealed by a spy for the Winters. Vivian is implicated in a anonymous letter about Sean and Marita, and she arranges for a better deal with the farmers in return for the letter not being publically displayed. Sean loses the election, but is selected as a deputy advisior for regional affairs by the newly elected assemblyman.
Homecoming (109 : 18 December 1998)
Ned suffers a head trauma that leaves him in a coma, hovering near death. While in the coma, he sees visions of his late wife Libby who shows him that he does have something to live for - his children. Alice takes over Ned's care with a vengence, while Sean tries to manage the farm and his new political appointment. Clay and Jeremy try to keep the breeding business running after concerns from some of their clients begin to interfere. Lexy feels responsible not only for her mother's death, but her father's serious condition as well.
Winner's Circle (110 : 1 January 1999)
Lexy wants to ride
in the Logan's jumping contest, but has to find a way to demonstrate to
Ned that she is capable enough to do so. Sean's college friend comes
for a visit and falls for Alice, but is it true love?? Jeremy warns
Alice that he is a womanizer, but Alice rejects his advice. Ned discovers
that he has to let Alice make her own decisions, or he'll end up pushing
her away. Alice makes the right one, even though it breaks her heart,
after discovering a secret that her paramour was trying to keep hidden.
Lexy is allowed to ride in the jump off and wins in her class.
