CHART #1: THE DESCENDANTS OF HENRY KEAN

NARRATIVE FOR CHART #1

KEEN / KEAN / KEENE FAMILY HISTORY NARRATIVE

HENRY KEAN & HENRIETTA CATHERINE ANTRA

According to the autobiography of John S Kean (grandson of Henry & son of Conrad) as published in "History of Crawford County" (pub. 1885), young Henry Kean and his bride-to-be Henrietta Catherine Antra eloped from Gottingen, Prussia to America shortly after 1800 and were married aboard ship on the way over. They settled in the newly founded village of Erie, PA where sons Conrad & Frederick were born. But Henry died about 1809 and Catherine then married John Gehr of Crawford County. John (born 1766, died July 5, 1852) and Catherine (born 1789, died Oct 3, 1873) are buried in Foust Cemetery, Conneaut Lake, PA.

CONRAD KEAN & FREDERICK KEEN

(Note: The spelling of the surname changed repeatedly over the years). Conrad and Frederick grew up in Crawford Co PA west of Meadville. Conrad operated a sawmill in Summit township. Frederick lived in adjoining Summerhill twp. in 1830, then farmed in Sadsbury twp. until his death after 1870. Fred married Sarah (Sally) Broadt (a.k.a. Bright.) (She was probably the sister of Susanna Broadt who married Conrad.) Fred and Sally are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Harmonsburg, PA at the north end of Conneaut Lake, together with infant son Franklin (not shown on chart) who died in 1843 at age 3. Sally died Feb 06 1872 at age 72. Apparently Frederick and Sally were not well educated since their signatures on deeds appear as "X". They raised the 7 children shown on the chart plus the aforementioned Franklin plus possibly an earlier daughter born before Louisa.

DAVID JOSEPH KEEN & LAURA LINDSEY

David Joseph KEEN was born about 1834 (per census records, although his tombstone says 1840) in Sadsbury Twp, Crawford Co, PA. His first marriage was to Sarah M Ellsworth), born about 1835. A daughter Clara was born in 1857. The family owned over 140 acres in Sadsbury Twp. (see map that follows) but in the early 1880's David sold it off in several parcels. He then apparently separated from Sarah because about 1886 he married Laura A Lindsey, who was only 18 at the time. Their first child Frederick W. was born in Pulaski, Lawrence County PA in 1887. They later settled in Coolspring Township, Mercer Co. PA. David was a veterinarian and a farmer. He died on the Coolspring farm in 1915 and is believed to be buried in the Coolspring Church cemetery although his marker is in the Millbank cemetery, Fredonia PA. Laura then married John C. Hubler. No records have been found of Laura's ancestors. Laura died in 1945.

CHILDREN OF DAVID & LAURA

The birthplaces of daughter Henrietta and son David are as yet unknown, but Joseph Emmett was born in Mercer, Mercer Co, PA in 1895. In the 1900 census father David's family was listed as renting in Fairview Twp. Jennie Louise was born that year. By 1910 they lived on the farm in Coolspring Twp. The farm had been purchased by David J from John J Foutz in 1907. The children grew up on the farm. They attended sunday school at the Coolspring Presbyterian church where early church records on display there list their names. Many early family photographs are available. At some point the family (except Fred) began using the spelling Keene. The last surviving family member was Jennie Louise, who died in Florida in 1992 at age 92.

SADSBURY PROPERTY MAP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, PA

This 1876 property ownership map shows the part of Sadsbury Township located just northwest of the village of Evansburg at the foot of Conneaut Lake (present day Conneaut Lake, PA.) Look closely near the center of the map and you will see the adjoining properties of cousins J.S.Kean (170 acres) and David Kean (should be spelled Keen) (140 acres.) Near the top left corner of the map are some Gehr properties.
