ARLEN SEAWRIGHT, A YOUNG MAN FROM TEXAS, HOPES TO BECOME PRESIDENT SOME DAY. BUT FIRST HE MUST BECOME SENATOR. AND THAT IS THE STORY OF DEMOCRACY, AN EDGY NEW MUSICAL SET IN THE HEART OF AMERICA IN THE LATE 1940s, A TIME OF ENORMOUS MORAL AND POLITICAL CONFUSION. ON THE ONE HAND, WE HAVE JUST WON THE WAR AND PEOPLE ARE CELEBRATING. ON THE OTHER, WE ARE FACING McCARTHYISM AND SEGREGATION AND THE PEOPLE ARE DIVIDED. AND ARLEN SEAWRIGHT IS CAUGHT UP IN ALL OF IT. A MAN OF ENORMOUS APPETITE AND AMBITION -- NOT UNLIKE ANOTHER YOUNG TEXAN OF HIS DAY -- SEAWRIGHT EMBARKS ON A CAMPAIGN THAT ULTIMATELY BECOMES MORE AND MORE CORRUPT EVEN AS IT BECOMES MORE AND MORE SUCCESSFUL. IN THE END, WE ARE ASKED TO CONSIDER THE SAME QUESTION AMERICA IS CONSIDERING TODAY: WHETHER WE PREFER TO UPRIGHT, HEARTLESS POLITICIAN, OR THE RANDY RASCAL WITH THE HEART OF GOLD.
