Back to Part 1 of the Complete Filmography

Loose Cannons (1990)

Direct to video shocker with Aykroyd as a schizophrenic policeman partnered with Gene Hackman. Dom DeLuise co-stars in a plot concerned with a porno film starring Hitler.

Bunn - I really do want to watch this film!!! Massively. I've heard it's good, so I'm going to search out a copy and watch it. I'll get back to you on this one.

Dave - Bunn, I own it on video! Sheer shite but annoyingly enjoyable shite at that. This is Aykroyds movie as he assumes the personalities of fictional characters during moments of high stress - thus during a gunfight he suddenly transforms into the entire bridge of the Starship Enterprise...

Masters of Menace (1990)

Biker road movie starring David 'Sledgehammer' Rasche as the head of a hell Angels-esque consortium who take the ashes of a former member toward Vegas. Aykroyd appears in a cameo as, if we remember rightly, the Sherrif who forbids them to leave the state...

Neither of us have seen this but Variety said "Original humor was obviously not required" What do they know?

My Girl (1991)

Aykroyd has a supporting role as the widowed mortician father of Anna Chlumsky in this Macauly Culkin starrer. A partial reteam of the Trading Places cast as Jamie Lee Curtis appears as his love interest.

Bunn - Oh, horrible. Just horrible. Even Dan acts with a look of horror on his face. Why did you do it, Dan? It's so bad it's offensive. I cheered when that little shit Culkin got stung by the bees. Deserved it. Buy it from your local video store and wipe your arse with this truly atrocious film.

Dave - Haven't seen it, but I know Culkin dies so how bad can it be?

Nothing but Trouble (1991)

Aykroyd's first (and only) stab at directing features him as a 106 year old Justice of the Peace in a backwoods town called Valkenvania. Chevy Chase and Demi Moore are the unwitting couple caught in a place where the penalty for speeding is death, and John Candy has two roles as a highway patrolman and his own sister.

Bunn - I'm going to watch this, purely because of what Dave says about it. It can't be that bad, can it?

Dave - Worse than it sounds - a truly truly truly abysmal film that must certainly plague Aykroyd at night. I know it does me...

Chaplin (1992)

Aykroyd takes the part of Keystone creator Mack Sennett in Richard Attenboroughs biographical drama.

Bunn - I really enjoyed this. I do have a fondness for Bio-Pics anyway (with the exception of Wired which is worse than Santa Claus Conquers the Martians) but more as a film, in general, as opposed to an actual Dan Aykroyd movie. He is very good in it, but it's worth looking further than that when viewing. Recommended.

Dave - It's a bit of a dull movie but Kevin Kline pulls off a good Douglas Fairbanks, Aykroyd pulls off a good Sennett and Robert Downey Jr pulls off a good Chaplin as well as most of the female cast. Too bad that Attenborough managed paint-by-numbers photography and a career worst performance by Anthony Hopkins.

Sneakers (1992)

Phil Alden Robinson's caper movie has Aykroyd as a member of Robert Redford's security firm caught up in a tale of international espionage.

Bunn - Oh, shit. This is really good as well. Maybe this should replace The Blues Brothers. Hmmmm. I think it's the whole "science geeks get the upper hand" thing, but this is fantastic!! Don't you just want to be one of them? All that....stuff. Ha, yeah, loved it. Truly re-watchable piece of cinema.

Dave - Aykroyd here is quite clearly Ray Stantz a few years later and a with a few pounds added on. He can be a right fatty sometimes. If it wasn't for Grosse Point Blank this would be the best Aykroyd movie ever. Even if you don't like it you can still laugh at Robert Redford for playing it straight whilst everyone else was quite clearly taking the piss...

This is my Life (1992)

Biographical drama with Julie Kavner attempting to wrangle her family and her ambition to be a stand up comic. Aykroyd takes a supporting role...

Neither of us have seen it but both Leonard Maltin and Roger Ebert have it average reviews...

Coneheads (1993)

Aykroyd is Beldar, head of a 'parental unit' from outer outer outer space who crash lands in suburbanite America and attempt to fit in. Oh yeah, and their heads are like cones.

Bunn - Eek! Aliens with large heads!! I haven't seen it, but I will watch it soon. I don't really enjoy sci-fi at all, and, as this has aliens in it, in my opinion, it's sci-fi. I hope that doesn't affect my opinion on it though as it looks reasonable film fodder.

Dave - Not Aykroyd's finest moment. A few good jokes and a few good effects are the only excuses to watch this desperate attempt to cash in on the popularity of post-SNL stars movies following the success of Waynes World.

Canadian Bacon (1994)

Aykroyd has a cameo in this film from documentary maker Michael Moore. John Candy's last released film has him as a border sheriff caught up in a war between the United States and Canada.

Neither of us have seen this but Leonard Maltin calls it a "one joke premise which lacks the satirical edge it needs."

Exit to Eden (1994)

Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell are cops who go undercover in an S and M paradise. God knows why...

Bunn - What a great film!! I watched this, almost by accident a few years ago, stuck in a Blockbuster with no idea what to rent. You almost get the opinion that Dan secretly adores leather & rubber and he does manage to meet and greet some thoroughly attractive ladies along the way. Good work, Dan!

Dave - I don't think I want to see it. I'm a little too concerned that seeing Aykroyd tied up and being whipped will unleash previous repressed homosexual feelings from deep within. No, it's a bad idea to see it.

My Girl 2 (1994)

The sequel consentrates on Anna Chlumsky's character as she goes off on holiday for the summer and falls for Austin O'Brien... Aykroyd once again appears as her father who is married by now to Jamie Lee Curtis.

Bunn - Haven't seen it, but I think you'll understand why. Anna Chlumsky was terrible in the first anyway, and is probably a really whiney obnoxious person in real life, so perhaps she should stick to making dogshit films so I'll never watch them. Because, let's face it, she really does care whether or not I see her pathetic attempts at being cute. Grrr!!!

Dave - I think I've seen this, she snogs the guy from Last Action Hero. Urrggghhh, somethings shouldn't be released at all.

North (1994)

Rob Reiner's kiddie road movie has Aykroyd in another cameo as good ol' boy Pa Tex who Elijah Wood happens across.

Bunn - Hmmmm. Bruce Willis. Pink bunny rabbit costume. Elijah Wood. Not in a Pink bunny rabbit costume. Will I ever see this film? Yes, probably, and I shall let you know when I do.

Dave - I have this on video, I recorded it off TV at Christmas. I watched about 15 minutes of it before preferring to rotate the front wheel on my bike for the next 90 minutes.

Casper (1994)

Aykroyd has another cameo (as does Clint Eastwood) in this childrens friendly ghost comedy.

Bunn - Oh, animated ghost why don't you just disappear? I'm scared I'll enjoy this film, as it's got Christina Ricci in it, and I sort of like her. Now, not in her pre-pubescent Addams Family Days. That would be illegal.Hey, even I know that. Again, it's on video in the house, so I'll watch it just for you guys.

Dave - In the interest of completism I'll watch it too, I hope you lot out there appreciate what we're going through for you.

Getting Away With Murder (1995)

This blackest of black comedies has Aykroyd as an ethics professor who discovers that his elderly neighbour (Jack Lemmon) may be a Nazi war criminal. He becomes involved and various twists and turns (too juicy to describe here) thus take place...

Bunn - I regret to say I haven't seen it, although on the strength of what Dave says I'm almost glad I haven't.

Dave - Oh what a wasted opportunity - this could have been so good and yet it was butchered to death. The potential was for a really black, vicious film yet instead it became a fluffy little comedy. Sure it's offensive, not for the way it depicts the plight of the Jews during WW2, but because it is just so crap. Possibly Aykroyds worse, and it features the arse faced Lilly Tomlin as well, is there no end to my suffering?

Rainbow (1995)

Bob Hoskins directed childrens fantasy has Aykroyd playing yet another sheriff...

Bunn - Pooh!! Stinky piece of garbage film that should be sent ito space with My Girl. Although My Girl would obviously have some questionable stains on the cover. I've only ever seen the trailer and I had to go to a therapist for weeks after. Avoid, probably.

Dave - I saw a clip of it on Film 95 with Bob Hoskins calling to children who were riding a rainbow that they must believe in themselves. If that wasn't bad enough I lost a packet of fags on a bet that Aykroyd didn't have a moustache in it. This film is evil.

Tommy Boy (1995)

Aykroyd takes yet another cameo role in this Chris Farley/David Spade comedy.

Bunn - Hey, attention quite good movie!! Fat guy causes trouble. Brilliant. Chris Farley was superb in this, as well as his other films. Can't quite place Dan's appearance in it though. Have to re-watch it and let you know..

Dave - I might have seen it - fat guy hurts himself alot right? Oh wait, that could be Black Sheep, or could it be Beverly Hills Ninja, or could be any other film he's made? No, haven't seen it. Sorry.

Celtic Pride (1996)

Aykroyd and Daniel Stern are neighbours whose unhealthy obsession towards their bastetball team ends with them kidnapping the star player...

Bunn - Never seen it, but..hang on, hasn't it got one of the Wayans fellas in it? Oh, I don't like them, perhaps I won't bother, then.

Dave - I'm not even sure it's out in this country yet.

Feeling Minnesota (1996)

Aykroyd continues his cameo fanaticisms in this romantic comedy with Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz.

Bunn - Guess what....I haven't seen it. Ha!! Why do I even bother? It looks good, although it does have Keanu in it, and he's just a little too shit for my liking. Hello, Private Idaho - "Dude, I'm, like, totally homosexual, man!" Go away, little boy..

Dave - I liked it, it's uneven but Reeves' monosyllabic style suits him here. Let's just hope he doesn't make Little Buddha 2.

My Fellow Americans (1996)

Aykroyd plays the evil President of the United States who frames former presidents Jack Lemmon and James Garner to suit his own evil ideas. Did we mention he was evil?

Bunn - Got to be Number 15 or so in films Bunn hasn't seen it. we now own it, though so I'll sit through it in a few weeks or so.

Dave - Sorry, I haven't seen it either but I bought it yesterday...

Sgt. Bilko (1996)

Big screen remake of the Phil Silvers show has Steve Martin as the indomitable title role and Aykroyd as his long suffering base commander Sgt. Hall.

Bunn - Sgt Bilko, as in the TV series would be the spaceship that transported Rainbow and the My Girl films-Oh how I hate it. It's not big, it's not clever and it's so far away from being funny. If Sgt. Bilko was a country, it would be Australia and Funnyville would be the UK. Other side of the world. Sorry, I'm ranting. But I detest the TV show so much, I doubt I'll enjoy the movie.

Dave - If Bilko was Australia then the capital of Funnyville would be Erinsborough. The movie is passable clap trap but not a touch on the frankly brilliant TV series. Phil Silvers was Mayor of Funnyville and I mourn his passing...

The Arrow (1997)

This is a film that neither of us have ever heard of, nor can we find any evidence of it. Please remember, though, that we are situated in the UK and films take quite a while to come out over here.

Grosse Point Blank (1997)

John Cusack is hitman Martin Blank who has to contend with his school reunion, an old flame and a fellow killer(Aykroyd) who wants to set up an assassins union.

Bunn - Dave & I share the same opinion, brilliant film, although it still doesn't beat Neighbors.
Dave - Without doubt the best Aykroyd movie ever made - just too bad that it's Cusacks film and not his. A brilliant ensemble black comedy in which everybody complements each other. This film was one of the best of 1997 and deserves to be viewed by the entire filmgoing world. Repeatedly.

Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)

Sequel to the infamous classic has Elwood Blues released from joliet to find his brother dead... Once again he sets out to reform the band, this time with the help of John Goodman, Joe Morton and J. Evan Bonifant.

Bunn - Didn't go to see it at the Cinema, as I had no-one to go with (aw, pity poor Bunn) but I'll watch it when it eventually comes out on video over here. Not too sure about the small boy in it though. That just doesn't seem right. Perhaps it's pandering to the new breed of Cinema-goers, I don't know. But when I see it, I'll let you all know..

Dave - The film that should not have been made. As to be expected the music is great (check out the finale) but the plot, acting, direction and every other factor suck. Cock. Big time. While Goodman sure can bellow he is no substitute for John Belushi, Bonifant as orphan Buster manages to be irritating and annoying at the same time and Morton just looks lost. Even the exaggerated car crash is crap. Avoid at all costs.

Whenever possible all covers were scanned in personally... all others were taken from http://www.reel.com where you can buy most of the movie featured here.
