The original wild and crazy guy was born in 1945 in the appropriately named Waco, Texas. In between working at Disneyland, teaching himself magic, juggling and the banjo and acting in an amateur theatre company he studied symbolic logic at the Californian Long Beach State University. He moved into show buiness properly by writing material for The Smother Brothers Comedy Show among others but soon, at the insistence of his manager, he moved from behind the scenes to out in front. He became the opening act for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and other rock groups (including, bizarrely, The somewhat softer Carpenters) and won a place on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Three years later he was on Saturday Night Live and had a bestselling album, Let's Get Laid, under his belt. An Oscar Nominated short (The Absent Minded Waiter) and several guest appearences in a few movies later he co-wrote The Jerk and the rest, as they say, is history...
