The Obvious
Stuff
Of course, some blatantly obvious qualities of a film can make or break its coolness. Many things can destroy a potentially awesome film, but here are a few things that can make it excel. Future movie makers take heed, for these seemingly simple qualities have eluded many a past filmmaker... Writing -- yes, a good story is a good thing to make a good film about... Dialogue -- although I let this one slide for action films, dialogue plays a key role in so many ways. Smart, realistic dialogue helps to bring a film's characters to life. You guys in charge of the Superman flick remember this! Direction -- Got a good script? That script have great dialogue? Well, that can be worth about as much as Waterworld "collectible" if you have poor direction. Go see Batman & Robin if you doubt this fact. You guys in charge of the Superman flick remember this, too. Directors can also be influenced by a lot of different factions as well, including producers or demanding actors. But, in general, truly great direction comes from the director who is influenced by his/her own vision alone. Portrayal -- the duty of the actors and actresses... Great performances can make a film shine, but a few weak portrayals can often be overlooked, unless the movie only has a few characters, or the portrayals are in major roles... This is all pretty obvious, but I thought I'd lay the groundwork for and understanding here... okay?
