According to reports in the UK media, David, who plays agent Fox Mulder in the hit Network Ten drama, is actually blind in one eye!
The handsome star (top) injured his right eye in a basketball accident as a teenager.
David, 33, has to dye both of his eyes before he goes in front of the camera.
He said: "I have a dilated pupil and dye them with drugs for the viewing public so the don't get scared of me.
"It makes me laugh when I'm described as a sex symbol, because I'm a hideous freak!' Not even co-star Gillian Anderson knew of his secret.
Mind you, she might just be a little preoccupied with her own affairs, especially her financial ones.
The beautiful star, who plays afent Dana Scully, now has a bank balance that is anything but a sight for sore eyes.
Gillian (above, with new boyfriend Rodney Rowland) has just agreed to a whooping $8 million deal to star in the big-screen version of The X-Files, due out next year.
She was furious that David was offered more money for his role in the film (which will be called Blackwood and starts production in the next few weeks) and for his television appearances.
Studio bosses have now relented and have decided to pay Gillian the same amount of money as David. He gets about $140,000 an episode of The X-Files, while Gillian has been receiving just $70,000.
An insider says: "Gillian delivered an ultimatum. She said, 'I want equal pay or I'm not doing the film'."
