Introduction
After a week and a day after my second Boyz II Men concert, I wasn't too excited for this concert. I was still shocked about meeting the Boyz, and how great the show was last time. This concert would end up being my favorite concert by them, (their performance), but the security sucked, and the people around me were just...well, read on about my third Boyz II Men concert experience in Concord, California at the Concord Pavillion on June 3, 1998.
The Concert
When my dad and I got to our seats, we found out we were in front row center, and I was so excited. About a half hour before the show, I met another internet friend, Andrea, who was really cool. She was in the third row with her older brother. While we were talking, we noticed this huge sheet over our heads, and it was covering this huge silver Boyz II Men logo (like the one on my necklace). First, Destiny's Child, and Next performed and they were okay, like the last time, but I was ready to see the Boyz again. Right when the lights dimmed for the Boyz, I stood up. All of a sudden, 100 girls came running to right where I was, so I got my spot on the baracade, and I was so angry. Five minutes before Boyz II Men came on, a guy with Boyz II Men said no one could stand up there, but the security was so terrible, they just stood there and let that happen. I know it sounds like I am whining, but how would you like it if you got first row, center, and had 100 other people where you were, when their seats were way up in the 20th row.
Enough of my complaining, for now, the Boyz started off with "Motownphilly," and did it great, of course. After that song, I found out I had this wacko next to me screaming every five seconds. Not only was the wacko next to me, but my dad was in back of me (he was my bodyguard) making sure no one messed with me or crushed me on the baracade. Back to the Boyz, they then did two of the fast songs from Cooleyhighharmony, "Under Pressure," and "Sympin'" which got the crowd going. Next they did "Baby C'Mon," which they always perform great live with their girl dancers. Then Shawn told everybody why Mike was sitting in the back, and everytbody said awwwww. Then we all screamed out his name. While all of that was going on, Wanya went to a corner of the stage, and un-zipped his pants, for some reason, then Nate came over to see what was
going on. I stopped looking after a few seconds because that was his business, whatever he was doing. The lights dimmed a bit, and "On Bended Knee" was the next song, so they all sat on the stage. Nate was closest to me, so I just stared at him the whole time. :-) "On Bended Knee" will always be one of their best performed live songs. Also, Wanya's voice definetly seemed like it recovered from the last time I saw him. He was singing all of his parts this time, unlike the week before. While the concert was going on, Andrea was near me, and I told her which song was next each time, so we knew what was going on. The wacko even talked to me a bit, she was 24 years old, her favorite was Wanya, and she was even crazier than most of the people around me. Because she
was so crazy, the Boyz never came near where I was because they seemed scared of her! Anyway, my favorite song was next, "Doin' Just Fine" and I watched the choreograpy better this time. "End of the Road" was next and everyone in the audience sang along.
After a small break, a piano came out with roses in it, (on my side), and the Boyz were on the other side of the stage, (from where I was, on the left side), and sang "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," which everybody loved because of the a cappella. The Boyz were still wearing the blue leather chaps, but without the jackets they put on during "On Bended Knee." They then went to my side again, introduced their musical director, Jamie, and the wacko next to me was screaming his name the entire time. So, Shawn introduced him, and said that they were going to sing songs that they don't usually sing live. Wanya was sitting right in front of where I was, and the wacko kept asking for his towel, but he never gave it to her. While Shawn was talking, Mike caught my dad in the crowd, and sorta nodded his head, because he recognized him from last week, and my dad was the only man in a sea of 100 women, just to protect me. Anyway, they sang "Please Don't Go" which everybody knew the words too, and then they sang "Lonely Heart" which only I knew the words too, around me. Next, Nate introduced "Can You Stand the Rain" and he said which album it was from, and everybody went crazy for it, so Mike put his hands over his ears and started laughing. The last song they did around the piano was the Dru Hill song, "We're Not Making Love No More" which was done a lot better than Dru Hill. About halfway through the song, Wanya was the only guy left on stage doing his own Sisqo impression. He told the crowd to say, "it doesn't feel the same" and everybody was doing that. Once Wanya left, Jamie was on the piano, while the Boyz got changed for the next song.
Then the Boyz came out in white shirts and pants, and sang "Girl in the Life Magazine," one of my favorite songs that they do live. They then took off their white clothes and had on the same thing as my last concert, black jeans (with holes in them), a black shirt, and under the black shirt, a black undershirt. Since just about the entire crowd was standing, Wanya didn't need to tell the crowd to get off of their seats for "U Know" and "Little Things." Next came another clothes change.
After a short intermission, they came out in red jackets (buttoned in the middle), with white pants. They started the slow song set with "4 Seasons of Loneliness" which everybody around me went nuts for. Next came "Water Runs Dry" which I couldn't sway to since I was being squashed. Then came "I'll Make Love to You." I didn't get a rose this time (I got a rose from Shawn the week before), I was fine with it. It was funny when Nate came over to the wacko, she was going absolutely crazy, jumping over everything, so he put his finger to his mouth, she stopped going nuts, and she got a rose from him. It was pretty hilarious to see that. Now Andrea was next to me, and the last song was coming up...
The finale was of course "Can't Let Her Go" and they came out in their Groove hockey jersies. A funny thing happened when Wanya came out because his Groove jersey was backwards, so his number (#92) and his name were on his front, and the Groove symbol was on the back! Then Shawn came near us, and pretended to pull his shorts down, but he didn't. The "Can't Let Her Go" performance was fantastic. At the very end, Shawn said, see ya in 1999, so I can't wait until then. That was the end of my third Boyz II Men concert, I hope you all enjoyed it.
In Conclusion...
The Boyz' performance was fabulous, but the security was terrible! If I ever get 1st row center again, I will definitely tell the security people not to let anyone up there, but the people in the first row because it really wasn't fair that I couldn't enjoy myself in my seats, instead I had to be squashed for two hours. Oh well, that's not Boyz II Men's fault, so other than that, I LOVED the show.
