Talking with Boyz II Men on Mentoring

This article is thanks to Denise!

We were lucky enough to go backstage at Madison Square Garden recently and meet Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary, Wanya Morris and Nathan Morris, band members of the pop and R&B group Boyz II Men. They were performing at a benefit concert, along with the musical talents of Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin and Barry Manilow, honoring the National Mentoring Partnership program. This program recruits and trains adults to become mentors to kids and adults. The idea is to coach or tutor them into becoming the best that they can be. It is a national organization, and we were told that volunteers are always needed.

Q. What can we do in our school to further this mentoring program?
A. Nate: Allow yourself to be open and always listen to your teachers. A lot of kids today tend to watch TV and watch the way the TV characters portray their lives, and tend to think that is always the way life is. In actuality, your parents teach you a certain way, and you should always be respectful to your elders and things will work out.

Q. How can you find kids to join the program?
A. Shawn: Kids join the organization by wanting to be a part of it. The National Mentoring Partnership is dedicated to helping kids find mentors.
