Michael McCary is possibly the most-often-quoted member of
Boyz II Men - and sometimes his gift for "telling it like it is"
gets him in trouble! Don't get this guy wrong-he's just a
regulr Joe who enjoys reflecting on life.
Michael McCary is proud of his bass voice-and his trademark
walking stick, which he claims is not to look distinguished,
but rather, to keep him from crashing into things. (Just
because a guy moves so swiftly on stage doesn't mean he's
graceful off stage!)
Michael is a cautious person who believes you should look
before you leap. Before getting into Boyz II Men, he studied the
music business intensley, reading books on everything from
how music videos are made to getting a record deal. But,
perhaps, he should be a little more cautious when speaking
to strangers-he can be a little too upfront, and it's
off-putting to some, but really, that's just part of his
charm.
Michael describes himself as a "homeboy" who enjoys cooking himself dinner, going to the movies, and playing basketball, and pool. There's nothing pretentious about him, which is interesting, because a lot of people who notice his walking stick assume that he's some sort of aristocrat!
This bassman says the high point of his life was getting a record deal, but at the same time, he made the conscious decision to keep his family out of the limelight. He explains, "We realize that our families don't want to be entertainers...and don't want to live that kind of life!"
During group inteviews, Mike is silent, letting the rest of the guys do the talking. But if you're an interviewer lucky enough to get a "one-on-one" with him, he'll teach you evetything he knows about the music business! Like Nate, some have said that Mike is all business, but if you ever spend time alone with him, you realize that he laughs an awful lot-especially at life's ironies.
Michael is from the area of Philly simply known as Logan-and in recent times, he's moved out. He remarks, sadly, "Logan's one of the biggest crime areas in Philly. It was kind of hard coming out everyday and going to different parts of the city while all your friends are slingin' dope and doing all the things you were trying to stay away from." Michael hopes to give back to the city he loves via doing benefit concerts with Boyz II Men.
